Hi. I received my OSB-1 a few days ago, installed it, and I am extremely happy with the results.

However, I am confused and frustrated by the optical cable that accompanied the soundbar.

First, let me explain that I'm not quite a rookie when it comes to audio & video equipment. I built my first stereo amp when I was 16 years old and have been pursuing the "perfect sound" for the past 50+ years.

However, I have never used a Toslink cable until I received my OSB-1, opting instead for digital coax cables.

The supplied Toslink cable plugs fine (albeit not the strongest feeling lock) into the S3 input port. However, the cable can NOT be inserted into the optical port for either my Panasonic TC-P55VT50 TV or Comcast/Motorola RNG200N (retagged Motorola DCX3501-M) HD dual tuner DVR box even tho' I tried every possible insertion angle and position.

Am I missing something here? Are there different kinds of Toslink ports? Any help out there? This is baffling to me, and i feel like an idiot.

There is only one kind of toslink port. Does the optical cable have the same type connection on both ends and do both ends fit into the OSB-1? Sometimes the optical ports are closed off with a plug when not used. There should be a little door on the port which the cable fits into. It will only go in one way.

The optical cables sometimes have a cap on them to protect the optical connector from damage or contamination. Any chance the cable is still capped?

Yes, the cable has the same termination on either end. As I had written in my original post (I think), both ends fit into the OSB-1, but it was a very insecure fit. ...and, yes, I know about the plug and little door.

@ EEman - DUH!!! What can I say?!?!

Having never used an optical cable before, I thought the little plastic "bulb" was part of the cable. I didn't realize until you told me that it is for protection only. Once I pulled it off, the cable snugly fit into jack on my old SSP. I assume it will fit everywhere else now.

I can't thank you both enough for your advice and for responding. I guess an old dog CAN learn new tricks.

Now I'll have to experiment with a direct optical connection between the OSB-1/TV and OSB-1/cable box versus the coax between cable box/OSB-1. Sounds like fun, and maybe I can learn even more. lol

Nice call, EEman! It never even occurred to me to ask that question! I didn't think you could even get the cables in to the connectors with the cap on. That would certainly explain why it was so loose in his OSB-1, too.
