I am purchasing the Outlaw 7700 in June at the Home Theater show in LA. I currently have a Yamaha 3300 receiver and to some people 100 watts is a lot of power but that is not the problem. The problem is that as I am listening to a friends' 200 watt Rotel I noticed that there are many dynamics in 2 channel stereo that I am missing, and the movies wow!!! So it is not just power.
I am undeceided about whether or not to buy a processor. Buying the 7700 is biting off a lot of cash, But I know that it will be worth it. Should I keep the Yamaha and use it as the processor or would there be a noticable difference with either the 970 or 990. Finally, is it necessary to have a separte power line for the 7700. I have a dedicated Home Theater room and have my equipment running thru two monster surge protectors. Can I use the same outlet? At 15amps?
Thanks,
Rubbersoul

I was surprised when I found (Monster) that my maximum draw with TV, 7700, DVD, 990 etc was around 5.2 amps...loud. and I have a 60 inch Sony LCOS. I installed two separate 20 amp circuits when I planned the setup. I was going to put the amp on one and everything else on the other. Not necessary.

I can't advise you about the YAMAHA, but I can tell you that the 990/7700 combo is dynamite.

I hope this helps

Thank you for your advice and opinion. Not having to install another outlet will save me more than just work but also headaches. Having a dedicated room is Great but if you have to make adjustments like newly placed outlets it involves a lot of work.

The difference between your Yamaha and your friend's Rotel is not purely a matter of an extra 100 watts. I say that assuming that the Rotel in question is a separate power amp. Separate amps will generally yield better sound than receivers (their design is less constrained by space and shielding from other signals, allowing for a larger power supply and better cooling by means of bigger heat sinks), even at the same rated power. Amps are also typically rated more "honestly" - many 100W receivers will output 100W from one or two channels at a time but will drive all seven at once to perhaps 70W, whereas a 100Wx7 amp will typically be able to output 100W to all seven channels at once. (There are exceptions to this receiver-rating rule, such as Outlaw's Model 1070).

You could keep the Yamaha as processor, but the feedback from folks who have compared similar Yamaha receivers to Outlaw's processors suggests that the 990 would be an audible upgrade.

My day job is as a mechanical engineer doing HVAC design, so I have spent some time mulling over electrical nameplate data for things like amps, projectors, and such in order to figure out heat loads (which end up being very close to the electrical loads that my EE cohorts are concerned about). If you look at the nameplate data for everything in your list, you will find yourself wanting to run two or even three dedicated circuits. If you factor in real-world use, you will find yourself looking at numbers like that offered by nfaguys. Let's say you are really cranking your system with a new Model 7700 driving your DefTech's - maybe it's a screening of a Lord of the Rings movie or Revenge of the Sith. Even if one or two channels experience brief peaks of high power output (which would still probably not take everything that a channel of the 7700 had available), the other channels will be working at a lower level. And even if you've left both DVD players, the LD player, the CD player, and the HD cable box on, those units are drawing a pittance of juice each. The projector is the nearest thing to a steady load in your system, and that load can readily be defined by the wattage of the lamp (maybe 200W?). All told, you'll probably end up staying safely below the 15A capacity of that lone outlet you have feeding everything.

Thank you for your input. I only run one display unit at a time(as you probably know) Dvd or cd or cable plus of course the receiver and sometimes the projector. You made me feel good to know that the dedicated 15 amp line I have is enough. I know that I will never have that amp cranked to full power. I might kill myself if I do. My friends Rotel is the 1095. The processor is an Anthem. I have to think about putting out more money for the 990.
Do you think that balanced cables are better than component cables ? (monster). I have been reading about cables, some people think that there is no difference in the say Price Verus Quality. Meaning that you really do not notice any sound improvement.
Personally I purchased MIT cable for my mains and good toslink from monster (mls 1000)for my dvd players. They did improve the dynamics or clarity to say the least.
I have never used balanced cables therefore I do not know if they should be used compared to the component

Balanced cables were originally developed for use in long runs through high-interference environments like recording studios - in general, they probably aren't any benefit over unbalanced for short runs such as you're likely to have in an entertainment center. As for cables, I tend to suggest something like Outlaw or Blue Jeans Cables rather than Monster - you'll get solid build quality for less money.

Thanks for the information on blue jeans. I will look into there product line and make a comparasons check. I think that monster makes good cables but admit that there are a lot better out there, but I am looking at the cost factor also. I have a friend who works as a monster rep. and I get some pretty good deals.
