I am running an Xbox through component cables to the Component DVD input on the 1070. Then I use a component cable from the Component Out on the 1070 to the TV.

With the TV set to the component input I am able to view Xbox games which are being output in 480p or 720p. But I am not able (new problem) to view movies being output in 480i. I do get sound with both games and movies.

I did not have this problem until yesterday when I hooked up the following:

Samsung ATSC OTA tuner with DVI output to the DVI2 input on the 1070 and back out to the TV through the 1070's DVI out.

So why am I having problems now?

I read a similar question in another post but I am having trouble wrapping my head around it. I am getting 480p and 720p output through the component but not 480i. Is it a coincidence that the problem started with the introduction of the ATSC tuner with DVI?

Argh, no cable and nothing on TV I want to watch a movie. Please help!

Are you sure your new component is on the DVI2 port (right one)? The DVI1 port is hard-wired to the DVD function, and I would assume that if you hook up a cable there that has signal, and the 1070 video select is on Auto it may choose the DVI input as the "better" choice because your component cables might be sending in 480i, but the DVI port (preferred choice) might be seeing something different.

I'm just guessing here, but if your DVI cable is on the wrong port (in order to see the Samsung you should have to be on Video2, which is hard-wired to DVI2) try the other one, or go into the input setup for DVD and manually set it for Component and see if that makes any difference.

DVD is set to component and to see the samsung I have to be on Video 2.

Also games are viewable on the component out (480p) just not movies (480i).

Did 480i work previously but suddenly stop working, or has 480i never worked? (I ask because some TV's have component inputs that are limited to only 480i or limited to only 480p and higher.)

The 1st stage of my setup was just using DVD inputs on component and the component video out.
I worked with BOTH 480p(xbox games) and 480i(movies).

The 2nd stage of my setup was adding the OTA tuner with DVI2 input and DVI video out. The OTA tuner worked and continues to work. But after this stage only the 480p signal through the component works.

Troubleshooting so far. I disconnected the DVI input going into the TV (Samsung 30" CRT HD ready) to see if the TV's DVI input limited the component input on the TV - but same problem.

Also, the TV has 2 component inputs. I switched the component input on the TV to both 1 and 2 to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. On both inputs into the TV 480p worked and 480i didn't.

When I get home tonight I am going to disconnect all DVIs from the 1070 and TV and see if the DVD 480i is functional. But if it is doesn't that mean that the DVI on the 1070 is preventing a 480i signal from going out on component?

A correction to my first post. Not sure that it matters. Xbox games are either 480p or 720p. The Xbox can enable or disable 480p, 720p, or 1080i output. My CRT of course does not support 720p. The xbox can send 720p games out in 1080i.
So I did not mean that I was displaying 720p signals.

It might not be a bad idea to bypass the 1070 completely and verify that all signals work as expected going direct to the tv set. To repeat gonk's question, did 480i ever work?

Yes 480i did work previously. see post at 12:19

I will first bypass the 1070 completely to verify the source is working properly. Thank you for the time saving idea.

Here are my goals:

1. Connect a 480p/480i source with component video and optical audio.

2. Connect an OTA tuner with DVI video and coaxial audio.

Should I be using the Component DVD input at all if I am not using the 5.1 audio inputs? Thus saving the real estate for a future OPPO.

If not, taking into consideration the various "hard-wired" associations of the DVD inputs, which inputs should I use to accomplish the two goals above?

What are the "hard-wired" associations? Are there any others besides the DVI 1 to DVD inputs, and the DVI 2 to Video 2 inputs? Is Video 1 tied to anything?

Thank you for your responses so far I do appreciate the help. Dealing with these puzzles is half the fun don't you agree?

So the original problem of using the DVD component In is still a mystery to me but...

I am now inputing on component video 3/optical 1 for the xbox.

The OTA tuner is on Video 2(DVI2) and coaxial 2.

With this setup the monitor out for both component and dvi are working simultaneously for all video sources, as they should.

Next time I go in to clean up the cords or add a device I will try and recreate the problem more systematically if possible.

Thanks, see ya.
