My goal is to have Dolby Digital as the default for DVD playback.

DVD player is hooked up to DVD component IN and Optical 1. Using XMen 2 for playback which has DD 5.1 and DTS.

If I play the movie in DD 5.1 the 1070 does not give me DD or DTS or any of the D+ choices, only the PLIIx modes.

If I play the movie in DTS the 1070 gives me all of the mode choices (DD and DTS) however no audio can be heard.

If I am not providing enough information just let me know I will post it quickly. Thank you in advance.

Let's try a couple things. First, write down what the front panel display says when XMen 2 is playing with the Dolby Digital 5.1 track. I'm wondering if we're getting DD and Pro Logic IIx extensions or if it acting as if it's just getting a PCM stereo input. Second, check your DVD player's menus to see if there is a choice for DTS output - many players have a (stupid) option of outputting DTS as PCM or as a bitstream, and the only way a DTS output will work is if it is set to bitstream. It sounds like your player's DTS output is set to PCM. For that matter, if there's a choice for Dolby Digital output as PCM or bitstream, it will also need to be on bitstream - if it is set to PCM, you will get a stereo signal no matter what, and the 1070 would only offer Pro Logic II processing.

Ok - thank you. I just read about the difference between bit stream and PCM. Turns out the DVD player had DD and DTS disabled problem solved. Why would they even make disable an option? thanks.

They never should have made it an option. Fortunately, the option seems to be disappearing from newer players (I think my Yamaha came with the defaults set to bitstream, and my Oppo didn't even include the options).

Thanks gonk!

I know I didn't originally post about this, but it's good info to know and helped me out with my 990 setup.
