Well guys,

In my topic "just bought 7125" mainly Gonk and XenonMan have answered my questions, and I am pleased to inform I bought a POLK CS-10 for center and Rsi-A3 for fronts. I am aware that is NOT my first choice, but, it was a matter of BUDGET. I have spent too much and I have to leave some $ to buy my bluray player (I am interested in OPPO).

Ok. Now my question. I won't have immediate money to buy surround speakers, therefore it will work meanwhile fronts and center. However I have two 50 Watts speakers (reminder I have a 7125) which I could set for two surrounds. Is it possible or I would burn those speakers?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

They should be fine unless you turn them up to deafening levels.

Thanks Jimna.

I am not planning to become deaf...So...I will use my old speakers as surrounds.

If you want to protect them, put a 1/2 amp slo blo fuse in line with the positive wire. It will blow well before your speaker gets hurt. If you find it blows too soon you can increase the rating in 1/4 amp increments. 1 amp is about 100 watts or so.

My understanding of possible damage to speakers is that they are either severely over driven or the amplifier is over driven forcing it to go into "clipping". It is the clipping that damages the loudspeaker. But that is only my limited understanding.

The original post indicated that the 50 watt speakers were going to used as surrounds. Most movie soundtracks tend to focus much of the sound across the front left/right and centre, with low frequecies to the sub. The surrounds are just that, they provide for surround effects. The surround speakers don't usually place that much of a demand on the amp (and therefore highly unlikely to go into clipping). Most systems have much smaller surround speakers in comparison to the mains.

Quite a few name brand receivers rely on the fact that soundtracks focus most of the action on the front three channels. I suppose this is how they can market "910 watt" receivers, when the actual rating is really 130 watts x 2 20hz-20khz. Sure all channels are rated for 130 watts, but there is not usually an "all channels driven' spec. Some may argue that most people will never need that kind of power. But in my experience, having lots of potential power has made for more enjoyable movies and music. I suppose it about having available power for the peaks.

I think it is very possible for you to enjoy your system using the 50 watts speakers at reasonable volumes.

I agree most speaker damage is due to being fed uncontrolled power such as an amp being driven into clipping. The chances of driving the surround channels into clipping on a 7125 is pretty slim. It is possible to overdrive the surrounds in a 5 channel music mode such as the 990s 5 channel "party" mode. If you are worried about over powering the surrounds protect them with a cheap fuse.
