Hi All,

I'm new here and looking hard at the 990/7125 combo for my 15x17x8 theatre room. I currently have a 5.1 setup driven by a Cambridge Azur 540R which I like, but would like to make the move to separates.

I use speakers made by a company call Kinima, which I quite like. They are generally about 92db in sensitivity, and can support 250 watts input.

Here is a link to the mains if anyone is interested. Rears are HiG1, center KC2.

I am curious if simply adding the 7125 for now (short on cash) would add a noticible impact generally, while using the 540R as a pre/pro. I've never tried it with a power amp before. The 540R does 85wpc.

Would it be worth doing this in stages, or should I wait till I can do both at once?

Thanks

Pete

I wouldn't feel bad at all about doing it in stages (although you may lose the package price savings, I'm not sure about Outlaw's policy on that). I moved to separates the same way (bought an amp to use with my receiver as pre/pro and then added a processor the following year), and both upgrades were nice improvements to my system.

Thanks Gonk. Went ahead and picked up a b-stock 7125 with free shipping (sweet deal) which will likely offset the value of the combo deal.

I'm not sure how much of a sonic difference I'll hear, but I'm hopeful it will help.

From there, I'll begin the debate about how much better a 990 is than my Cambridge 540R from a pro/pro standpoint ;-)

Thanks

Pete

I had the oppurtunity to audition the 540R with a pair of B&W 604s. The 540R as the brains and a Sherbourn 5210A 5-channel Amplifier 200 wpc (not to be confused with Sherwood).

I started with Sherbourn's PT-7010A Processor as the brains, this gave me a starting point for my audition. I found the Sherbourn pair to be resonably close in sound to my Outlaw 7500 and 990 pairing.

I then slaved in the 540R. With the 540R in control, the sound was very bright and difficult to enjoy for me.

The reason I tried this experiment was to save some funds if I could. Unfortunately, I could'nt bring myself to make the compromise.

I have to agree with Gonk when he says there's absolutely nothing wrong with building your system in stages.

Hope my 2 cents on the 540R as a pre/pro help. Good luck with your purchase!

Hey Shotgun,

Thanks for the reply. I have recently just setup my 540R HT setup, and haven't been very happy with the 2 channel performance. My Rega Mira3/Planet 2k destroys it on all levels, but I had thought that a lot of the issues might be the differnt rooms my 2channel and 5 channel setups are in.

I expect I will try the 7125 as an amp with both my mira and the 540 to judge its performance, and should i not be able to get the 540r to sound as I'd like it to in 2 channel, may look at the 990 earlier than later.

Just need to close some more deals to get the cash ;-)
