I am on the verge of purchasing my first HD TV but am afraid of the lip sync issue that I read about here and on other forums. How big of a problem is it and is it more prevalent on certain brands of TVs. I have a 950 preamp and am looking to upgrade to the 990. The 950 does not have an adjustment for this ( I think). If I buy the TV and have this issue will it force me to go to the 990 to get the adjustment.

Thanks

The Model 990 does have lip sync adjustment, which is independently adjustable for each video input.

I have not had much trouble with lip sync issues, but I am also running a 32" direct view HDTV without any sophisticated video processing. I did run into some delay on my Yamaha DVD-S1500, which the 990's AV sync allowed me to eliminate pretty easily.

Depending on your upgrade budget, it is worth noting that the Model 1070 receiver also has this feature. If the TV busts the budget, you can buy a 1070 and use it with your current amp today, then upgrade the processor later and move the receiver to another room in the house!

Does this mean if I have lip sync issues my beloved 950 will not be able to resolve it? Would there be other remedies without replacing my preamp?

Sadly, the 950 does not support AV sync delay. Some DVD players offer a bit of AV sync adjustment, which would help if the player was the source of the video delay.

Lip sync is only an issue if you're doing video processing with the TV (like upconverting or stretching). The TV's processor doesn't have the oomph to mangle the video in real time so it falls out of sync with the audio (which it isn't mangling). The simple solution is to turn off any "extra" processing of the video and have the source do the processing (upconverting DVD or upconversion on the cable box).

If you don't already have a TV with this problem and are worried about a new set, I suspect it won't be an issue with anything of recent (2005+) vintage.

AVS Forum has been running a lot of comments on lip sync issues around the new Samsung 1080p TVs, which suffer from lip sync when a preprocessor gets in between many sources and the TV. I set my 990 to 73 ms on the input from the SA 8300HD STB and the delay is usually not noticeable. In the discussion, a number of people have talked about a $230 gadget called a Felston dual delay DD540 (http://www.felston.com/dd540/index.htm) that permits an external delay so you don't have to abandon your loyal 950. I haven't tried it, so can't personally vouch for it.
