Whenever I enable the midnight mode on the 990.. it doesn't appear to do anything. I understand how in the three levels of midnight mode. low, mid, and high. it's suppose to supress the audio peaks while watching a movie for instance. Does this work for all imputs? I am usually watching a DVD.. and i swear it doesn't do anything.

My older Marantz receiver.. had only one midnight mode setting.. and it did what it was suppose to do. Is there any other setting that I need to enable in the 990 for it to work correctly?


Anyone else notice this in their 990 when using midnight mode?

I tinkered with that a while back. Night mode only works with Dolby Digital soundtracks according to the manual, so it wouldn't do anything with a DTS DVD. When I tried to figure out exactly what night mode was doing, I found that each level of night mode appeared to reduce peak sound levels by ~2dB. That was tested using the opening salvo of the early sea battle scene from Master and Commander set on A-B repeat with my SPL meter sitting on the couch.

Ok. thanks. I was watching a DTS movie when i noticed this the other day. I wish it worked with DD and DPLII signals as well. but i guess we can't have everything, right? wink

Well, it should work with any DD source (even if PLIIx is applied afterward), so it's just analog, PCM, and DTS sources that would be missing out.

I played with this setting last night while watching LOTR's, Return of the King and it worked as advertised.
