I received my 990 this weekend. I'm happy with the product overall but having a problem with auto setup feature. I configured some things manually such as x-over and speaker size so I could use it in the interum.

When I select the setup in the menu I get the nice loud white noise (1 to 2 seconds) from the front left and the receiver displays on the screen either the speaker or mic is not working. Now I can obviously clearly hear the noise and the mic IS plugged in the correct port. Any ideas as to what might be going on other then a bad mic?

I recieved a 990 from this latest batch of shipments (April 2006), and am having this exact same problem. I can calibrate the speakers using the manual test tones, so I know the speakers are functioning properly. I suspect the issue is something to do with the microphone.

A number of folks have had trouble with the 990's Auto setup, me included. If you don't have one, I suggest you get a radio shack SPL and calibrate the individual channel levels using the manual method.

I had Outlaw ship me a new microphone hoping this would resolve the issue. It did not. I'm thinking there may be something wrong with the receiver or latest batch of recievers. I've even placed the mic right next to the speaker just to see if it could register the speaker was there and nadda as it was mentioned room acoustics could pose an issue.

One of the members close to me on this forum was kind enough to offer his SPL meter to manually set it up. So I'll end up taking him up on the offer so I can get this puppy sounding the way it should.

Hmmm? Jeff that is odd. The chances of you getting two bad pre amps in a row would be astronomical to say the least. Not that's it's not impossible of course.

On occasion while using the automatic set up in my 990. I have had to run it more than once. For some reason the signal it sends to my sub is freaking it out. So it will run the sub auto test 2 or 3 times before it's happy with it.

If you have one or more of your speakers not hooked up.. that will also cause the automatic set up to not complete itself.

I had my sub turned off the first time I ran the auto set up.. and it didn't complete the set up.

I didn't have another preamp shipped only a microphone. It's just odd two people in the last two weeks have setup issues. All 7 channels are hooked up as well is the sub. It's either a outlaw issue or a room acoustic issue for both of us.

here is something you may want to try.. to help isolate the problem. just try running the auto set up.. in 5.1 instead of 7.1 and see if it works then.

What exactly is it doing when you try and use the auto set up? Please explain. thanks

In my case, I only have a 5.1 system, leaving the SBL and SBR pre-amp connections un-connected. The auto setup doesn't even make it past the first test for the front left speaker. The tone sounds and then it goes to the error screen. I've unplugged, replugged, powered on, powered off, etc, and the same thing happens, regardless.

I'd call Outlaw. They might recommend resetting the 990 to make sure it is back to factory defaults.

I received my 990 yesterday, and the auto setup worked fine. Well, except my Velodyne ULD-15 sub freaked out with the test tone -- I think it was triggering a temporary shutdown for a few seconds to avoid damage (scary!).
