Hello!

I am sure these threads popup all the time but I wanted some new info

I have been reading through previous threads for about the last hour or so and it sounds like this is the reciever that I am looking for but wanted to make sure I didn't miss something.

Up until about a week ago Home Theater didn't mean anything to me really. Then I went to a buddies house with a big screen and surround sound and was like wow this is awesome

I have been watching TV on a Walmart 27inch with a 50 dollar Apex DVD player. Just to give you background on my A/V experience.

Ok so your probably getting bored... I got bit pretty bad in the last week and have helped spur the economy a little. hehe.. The reciever is my last purchase.

So far here is what I have after 30 hours or research and looking and everything at CC,BB,Tweeter,Sears etc and reading all the awesome forums at avsforum.com.

Hitachi 50V500 LCD TV
Samsung HD931 DVD with DVI to the TV
Axiom Speakers - M60 Fronts, VP150 Center, QS4 Rears.

I didn't buy a sub yet because I live in an apartment and don't want to annoy my neighbors. I will probably end up getting one anyways but want to get everything setup in the mean time.

So now to the help. I plan to watch 95% DVD Movies, 5% MP3s from a HTPC I am gonna build. I do not plan to watch TV/cable at all.

I am looking for something that will give great sound! I don't care what it looks like and I am not going to run any video through this thing at all as I am going to do DVI to DVI. I have been looking for a no Frills just great sounding reciever and I think this is it. I only need to connect 1 DVD player and My PC to it with Digital Audio only from both, again no Video will go through it.

I am never gonna use Dual Zones, A/B or any of that stuff. I plan to use 5 channel Surround Sound for now.

I was recommended this reciever by Axiom along with the Denon 2803 and Harmon Kardon 525 which are alot more money and do a bunch of things I could care less about.

I am pretty sure I am going to buy this but just wanted some second opinions.

Thanks!
-Mike

I too just bought the 1050 not long ago, I tested all the other receivers and their is no other receiver that is built like this, with GREAT powerful sound, you will be amazed. I would rate it close to Carver, since I have owned several Carver components. How can you go wrong for $500 bucks. This receiver is built like a Tank..you cant carry the 1050 under your arm..

I have owned a 1050 for about 2 years and have really enjoyed it, more than any other piece of electronics I've owned in recent memory.

I've read some knocks of the 1050 recently, calling it "outdated", etc. for not offering the latest surround modes (DPL II et. al.)
It sounds like your listening/viewing habits are very much like mine, so I suspect the lack of these features would be of no conseqence to you.

I really like the sound of it in 2 channel stereo, which probably accounts for 60-70% of the usage my unit gets. DD5.1 and DTS sound great too, and since I have no room for a 6th speaker at the moment, anything beyond 5.1 is lost on me.

If your situation is similar, I would highly recommend giving the 1050 a try. Though I haven't looked, I've heard they are showing up on ebay with some regularity, so that may be worth a look.

Good luck!

John

Given that you are going to use the system 95% for DVD movies, I would strongly recommend having a 6.1 setup and not going to 5.1 if you get the 1050. Please see end of the Harry Potter thread for details. If you do that I believe you will be happy with your 1050 experience.

TTA89,
Not only is the 1050 an impressive piece of equipment for a spectacular price, the customer service is top-notch. I have never had a problem with my 1050, but if I did, I know the Outlaws will treat me with respect and do just about anything to help solve the problem.
This forum is also just about the most handy feature of the Outlaw universe. I always know when I have a question, I can post it here and get honest, informed and (somewhat);)unbiased responses from people who know what they are talking about. Outlaw to Outlaw is an especially handy resource.
I made the jump to 5.1 home theater about two years ago and was extremely satisfied with the results.
I don't worry about the 6.1, 7.1, 8.1... possibilities as, like John, I don't have the room either, and the WAF for me would be pretty low for such an addition.
From the description of what you want and your listening/viewing habits, the 1050 sounds like a perfect fit.

Good luck,

Chris

P.S.-Don't forget, there maybe a 1050 available in the B-stock section. I suspect that is improbable though.

CBWills: I am afraid I disagree with your assessment. TTA89 said that his 95% of his usage would be DVDs. My concern is that the 1050 is defective as a DD 5.1EX decoder without 6 or 7 speakers. My sense is that the number of disks that the 1050 cannot decode correctly in 5.1 mode will only increase over time.

73Bruin: I see your point. I haven't had this problem with any of my dvds.
Unfortunately you are probably correct as more and more dvds will be produced with the 'Potter Defect'. I guess the WAF will have to be ignored at some point.

CBWills:

I wish this isn't the case, I briefly had a 6.1 setup but had to take it down as it was poorly done and caused a big WAF issue. However, during that period it was self evident what a great job the 1050 does in 6.1 mode with 6 speakers.
