The HDMI handshake seems a little flaky in the 976, but when things are working oh boy is the sound amazing.
My TV is a 2017 Sony XBR65X930E 65-Inch 4K HDR Ultra HD TV and my Blu-ray player is a OPPO UDP-203 Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Player.
In the TV input settings under HDMI Signal Format there are settings Enhance 4K HDMI Signal Format or Standard.
The Enhance 4K HDMI Signal Format setting was causing problems with some older DVD’s (screen blinking on and off, not able to maintain handshake). Changing this from the default to standard seems to fix this, still testing to be sure.
I’m having some of the same issues with my HTPC that I discuss in a different thread. This setting change in my TV didn’t help my HTPC.

I have not had any problems with the handshake so far. If anything the 976 seems more stable than the 975 which, on occasion, required a restart to reestablish the handshake.

That setting enables an HDMI 2.0a mode. Some older devices may not be compatible.

all my devices are new 2017 models. Everything works fine if I wire from the blu-ray player to the TV, but if I add the 976 between the two I’m having issues. The reason I bought the 976 was to handle older dvd’s & blu-rays from my collection and 4k blu-rays going forward. I should not have to limit my TV for the 976 to handle the video.

The 976 is "handling" no video. It merily let you chose a source, then pass the signal unaltered to the next device.

I don't have that TV obviously, but I have the Oppo 203. I'm not having any issue, paired with the 976, for any discs I play. I was thinking of the HTPC you mentioned maybe not being compatible with HDMI2.0a, or even the standard mode on the Sony.

LOL 3 years later I'm seeing the exact same thing with a Sony Bravia when enabling the "enhanced HDR".
ChromeCast ultra => 976 => Philips Hue Sync => Bravia TV.
The video randomly blinks in and out.
I I take the 976 out of the chain the video is perfect (and indeed the image is better than without the enhanced HDR)
ChromeCast ultra => Philips Hue Sync => Bravia TV.
If you still read this post, did you find a solution? I'm thinking of moving the 976 as a pure sound system like:
ChromeCast ultra => Philips Hue Sync => Bravia TV => 976 through ARC

Maybe Oppo -> splitter -> TV? If it works trouble-free, connect the 976 to the other port and you’re done😊

This sounds like ancient history but years ago I had the very same problem. I had purchased the Outlaw 950 and had handshake issues for the video signal going to my overhead projector. The 950 was simply passing through the video signal which I assume the 976 does. A call to Outlaw revealed that the problem was the length of the hdmi cable and Outlaw's suggestion was anything over 15 feet was problematical. The distance from the Outlaw to the projector required a 35 foot hdmi cable, well above the 15 foot limit.
I realized the true distance the video signal was traveling including the 3 foot hdmi cable from the source (a bluray dvd player) plus the 35 foot cable. Did the pass through part through the 950 also "add" distance? My solution was to bypass the 950 altogether (buying a bluray player that had 2 hdmi outputs) with one going directly to the projector for video and the second to the 950 for sound. I also purchased a "redmere" 35 foot hdmi cable that boosted the signal. Problem solved.
In your particular case what is the length the signal travels and what is the quality of the hdmi cable which now has to handle 4K and HDR.

John,
Great stuff! I hope your experience helps many😊.
8’ total - from the BDP thru the 976 to the TV. No issues! But one day I will relocate to another part of the house and...
Thanks again. Tony
