After all these years it is time to finally retire my 990. I upgraded my projector to the Epson 6050 and unlike my old Epson 5020 the HDMI won't work with a DVI to HDMI cable. After spending $4000 on a projector I need to keep my budget at a minimum. Has anyone went from a 990 to a 976? I'm hoping it will sound as good or better than my old 990. Also one thing that always drove me crazy with the 990 was lack of an OSD. How is the OSD with the 976 as opposed to the 990?

I did just a few weeks ago and I love it!
I was able to get rid of a bunch of cables and HDMI adaptors and an HDMI signal switcher.
Being able to just use the HDMI inputs and outputs on the 976 makes life a lot simpler.
The 990 did have a OSD but you had to use an RCA video cable and I don't any of the newer projectors even have a composite video input.
I would not hesitate to do the upgrade!!!!
I am glad that I did for sure.
For $1K you can't do any better for sure.

@butchgo thanks for your reply. It will be great to get rid of all my optical and coaxial audio cables and run everything through HDMI. I can also get rid of the tiny TV that I needed to see the OSD. Hpw do you feel about the sound quality? Is it better with the 976?

I think it is.
I am hearing things that I did not hear with my 990.
Especially with vinyl.
Better separation of instruments and vocals.
Hard to explain but it is there.

Wow! That is great to hear. Mine will be used more for movies and TV but that is what I was hoping to hear. The 990 was considered to be more high end than the 976 when I bought it. I can't remember exactly what I paid but it was far more than $1000.

I bought my 990 in October of 2007 and Outlaw was closing them out because they had another processor coming, which never materialized, and I think I paid about $700.00 or so.
It's been too long ago to remember.
Best deal ever!

To answer your question about the OSD I think the 990 actually had a much better display.
With the 990 you could rename all of the inputs to what ever you wanted.
That is not the case with the 976.
You are stuck with what it comes with.

The 976 has some issues but the audio quality is not one of them!

What issues have you run into?
So far mine has been trouble free!

I'm glad everyone is happy with the sound quality. I'm sad you can't rename the components. I know only HDMI 1-4 are for 4k so I was planning to use them as follows: 1) Tivo 2) Oppo BD player, 3) roku, 4) PS4. Is that possible? Also how does the OSD work? I'm guessing there is a seperate screen that pops up only to change settings on the outlaw.
