I just received my 1050 today and after getting everything set and calibrated w/ VE and spl meter i plugged in TPM, my first experience with 6.1 and it was great. But i had a nagging feeling that the surround level dropped , is this my imagination running wild or when the 1050 pulls out the rear channel matrix does the volume drop?

I am going to play some more tomm, but was turning to the gang for help

Thanks

VE isn't really equipped to calibrate the center surround, could be part of your problem...

Could the sensitivity of the two speakers make a difference? I have Paradigm 40 in the front, 91db and infinity in the rear , model rs 1000 89db and 6 ohm.

I will have more time to tweak later, i just did a quick check and in the 6.1 mode the rears drop like 8 db with the sound meter on the THX set up.

any suggestions?

Yeah same thing happens to me too. I thought it had to be my cheap sony speakers I use for the rears but I guess your having the same problems. When I put it on 6.1 it seems like all the information is going to the center rear and ther Left and Right rears volume drops or looses most of the info. So for me it sound much better if I just leave it on 5.1

Just wondering about something here. When you calibrated your system with VE, did you have 6.1 enabled? I don't have my copy of VE (or my meter!) on hand as I lent it out to some friends so I can't test if it makes a difference or not. Also, I've had 6.1 on so long I don't have a base to compare to otherwise. I may have to try a few things out just to see; but I think I'll wait until I get my tools back.

A couple of notes here, going back to my brief earlier post. I started out with 6.1 enabled when I was setting up my 1050 with Video Essentials, and quickly realized that it screwed things up -- the 5.1 track on VE was dividing the info between the left or right surround and the surround back, and I think there was some reduction in level in the process. I had to disable 6.1 and then come back afterward and use the 1050's test tones to set the level of the surround back channel.

I am quite chagrined, I did not toggle through the surr trim to set each individual rear speaker, hence i was only adjusting one rear, the right stayed constant along with the rear center. I balanced them on the 1050 test tones, and with the THX optimizer on TPM w/ adjustments set everything to within 2-3 db of fronts, i may boost the rear, it seems that the problem my be solved. Looks like i will have to adjust levels for 5.1 and 6.1

Time to test it with some movies.

thanks
