I've had a Model 1050 since early June 2000. It was the processor in my only system for several years until a year or two after I bought my own house. I eventually bought a Model 950 for my basement home theater and moved the Model 1050 upstairs for daily TV watching and music listening.

Now today, 26 December 2012, my venerable and still superb Model 1050 is going to be taking out of service ... to be replaced with the Christmas gift I received from my folks yesterday ... a brand new Model 975!!

So ... is anyone out there still rocking a Model 1050 for daily use?

I hope everyone is having a wonder holiday season!

I bought my 1050 about 3 years ago for $150 and wish I hadn't. It certainly taught me some lessons about what features to look for in an AVR. I bought it because it had pre-outs, 5.1 analog inputs and a good reputation. It is a good thing it had pre-outs since the left front speaker output went to work part time six months later. I first added a Parasound HCA-1000A, then later went all 5 channels with a NAD T-955.

Then I realized that there was no analog pass through on any of the stereo inputs and I didn't like the electronic timbre that the DSP imparted to my phono and analog sources. The only analog pass through is on the 5.1 channel input. So those inputs are shared between my Blu-Ray front analog outputs and my NAD 106 preamp using a Niles switch.

The FM section has that same DSP sound that the other analog inputs have, only worse. I had to add a NAD tuner to the preamp to get decent FM sound.

Finally, I use my MacBook Pro for digital playback, ripping CDs to Apple Lossless and feeding to the 1050 by way of optical inputs. Thus the 1050 does the decoding. While this is convenient, I think that the CD playback from my Panasonic Blu-Ray player though the 5.1 analog output is superior.

The best I can say about it was that it was an inexpensive "learning experience". I hope to say goodbye to it in 2013 and get maybe a Parasound C1 orC2.

Jim

As of this writing, February 4th in the year of our Lord 2000 and 13,I am still employing my venerable 1050 as my main front room theater receiver, though it has been limping along over the last 5 months with it's left front channel in a perpetual state of operational flux. My wife actually is encouraging me to proceed with my purchase of the Model 975/7125 combo since our experiences with the 1050, and with Outlaw overall have been so excellent over the last 12 years!

Moved my 1050 to family room with a set of nht super ones and M8 last summer for use with a new sharp LED TV. Other than the volume control nob issue(which isn't an issue for me because we only use the Logetech remote), still works great. I think I purchased it in '01.

We're still using our 1050 daily in our home! We bought it new all those years ago, set up the 6.1 surround and have never looked back. smile

I'm itching to upgrade to the 975 (we added a 7125 a few years ago), though. We're occasionally bumping in to some audio codecs that the 1050 can't decode (such as two channel DTS) on some of the blu-ray extras and I'd like to be able to hear the uncompressed audio from blu-ray, too.

I'm hoping we can upgrade with our taxes this year, but painting the house and redoing the deck may take care of that decision for us. Curse responsible decision making! Still... gonna keep my fingers crossed until we see how it plays out. Might get lucky! laugh

Certainly not the last. I bought a 1050 from a friend (and fellow Outlaw Saloon member) several years ago. While I don't know if it is used daily, it is certainly used on an ongoing and regular basis. And aside from a few quirks, it works like a charm. Absolutely perfect for his needs.

I loved my 1050, but I have to admit, I really am loving my 975! Hopefully someone will make an offer on the 1050 when I get my advert into the local paper & someone will keep using and enjoying it. <fingers crossed>

I'm in the same boat now, Pat. I've really fallen in love with the 975! I'm trying to decide now if I sell the 1050 or use keep it to employ a second system somewhere. If I can find a nice set of speakers that computer room could sure use some musical accompaniment...

Pat,

I'm happy to say that I'm still using my 1050 with a 750 amp. I was waiting to upgrade to an HDMI capable preamp, and then eventually a 7 output power amp. Yet, for the upgrade, as to why I'm not taking advantage of the 975, I want HDMI input wiht XLR output. I'm really thinking about the Marantz AV7701 with a Marantz MM8077 power amp. I've been very loyal to Outlaw, and would love to see a similar preamp, that has HDMI input and XLR outputs. (yet I haven't upgraded my sub to an XLR input one yet) Thoug, should I consider going with the Outlaw wireless system? That is a possibility, but I have concerns. Anyone else have input on my wants and needs. For, I do fear that my 1050 may go out soon, but I hope not! (knock on partical board or better yet fine cherry wood board)

I use the Outlaw OWA3 to signal my sub and it works very well. Unless you have issues with interference in your signal cables or very long runs between the components XLR cables will not provide a significant difference in quality of signal.

Hello Xenon,

So, I guess your saying that the XLR is not that much of an advantage, huh?

As to the OWA3, I wasn't exactly thinking of it for a sub. I was considering getting two 2200 to have as the power for my rears I currently have. That's to get rid of the long speaker cables I have running under a rug in my media room. Though I might go with 3, and move my sub, but I guess where I have it placed now it doesn't exactly bother the neighbors.

What are your thoughts about using it for rear audio channels, especially with the 2200s?

Thanks,

Trout

The OWA3 would work great for the rear surrounds. There is also an amplified version, the OWAA3 which would probably work well for rear surrounds since they don't need as much power. The 2200s might be overkill for rear surrounds but could be great as a second zone with the OWA3.

I just finished watching part of Star Trek (2009) on my system with my trusty 1050 at the helm. I bought this unit new from Outlaw in 2001 and everything is still working like a champ.

Outlaw separates will eventually be in my future, but for now I am still enjoying the 1050's sound. I streamed an old 80's movie, in pro-logic this weekend, and am still very impressed with it's processing in this old legacy format.

I've got a pristine 1050 w/o remote.. and the volume knob issue. What can I reasonably expect to get for it on the used market do you think? I was thinking about offering it up along with a Harmony 688.

Around Christmas time last year I saw a couple sell on eBay around the $125.00 - $150.00 area. I was looking at the market then when I was hoping we'd be able to upgrade to the 975. Now that we've upgraded, though, I kinda don't want to part with the 1050. I'd rather set it up in another room as a second system but I still need to get some speakers for it.

I found one of these locally last year for $100 with the volume control issue. I cleaned up the rotary encoder, and this receiver does daily duty in my man cave system.

I managed to make my TV switch the HDMI, then the coax digital out from the TV feeds the receiver.

Does it count if I'm in the garage every day, and my 1050 is in service out there?

I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment though.. I lost the remote, and since the volume knob only works in the *increase* direction, I'm scared to touch it! (Sucks that a cheap universal remote can't be made to run the 1050 if I'm reading correctly)

You can use a universal remote; for example, the Model 1050 is in Logitech Harmony's database. If you feel mechanically inclined, I've also included our link for removing the oxidation that can build up on the volume control.

Semi thread necro... I still have my trusty 1050 to this day and it's still going strong. The only thing not working is the infamous front panel volume knob...

I have it hooked up exactly as I did when I first set everything up... except now the primary input is my HTPC via optical TOSLink rather than the parade of previous input iterations of VCR, Blu-Ray, ReplayTV, WD Live, Rio Receiver, SqueezeBox, Boxee, etc. over the years.

The only thing that is really starting to cramp my style is the fact I have no HDMI switching, which is what may finally cause me to make the investment into a 975 and 7140 to join the 21st century. I have to admit, I think I got my money's worth out of the 1050 since my paltry $499 investment back in November 2002!

HDMI was the main push for me to upgrade to the 975 from my 1050, too. I need to find a decent pair of speakers and set the 1050 up in the computer room for music. I've been meaning to do so for a couple of years now but just never seem to get around to finding them. I suppose I'm waiting to stumble upon a bargain. smile

Well, I found some good speakers but instead of setting it up in the computer room, I replaced our front L/R in the home theater. The small ones we'd been using have now moved to the bedroom TV and the 1050 has come out of retirement! It's now doing easy time providing much improved sound over the built in speakers in the ol' Sony LCD. We are now daily users of the 1050 again!
