Hank:
My problem with the volume was identical to yours except that there from day 1. I never bothered to get it repaired because 99.9% of the time, I changed the volume it was via the remote and it wasn't worth the cost of shipping to get it repaired.
I agree that many electrical products seem to have a half life after which problems seem to occur (and often reoccur) with increasing frequency. That was the case with the Yamaha pre-amp I had before this. However, my 25+ year Nakamichi cassette deck, while seldom used, still performs like a champ when called upon. Which makes an argument for buying the best quality unit one can afford.

Same with my 950 - volume control turned up sometimes REDUCES volume and visa-versa. It also slips sometimes and the volume does not change when I turn the control. And, the transformer buzz in maddening. BUT, if I'd bought a name brand receiver 10 years ago, would it be problem-free today? I think not. Maybe it would be. My decade old Denon 4802R receiver has never given me a single problem. It's only the lack of new decodes and HDMI that have me looking for a new unit.

My 950's volume would slip, but would respond to the remote. I found this in the 950 section: I have two units with this issue, 950 and 1050. I bought them used this way, with the volume knob not giving the response expected, mostly going up when turning the knob either way, but if I push it in, I can get some semblance of control. I've read the old posts and decided to dig into my 1050. This is what I found- The volume control on the inner face board was loose at the crimps. I unhooked the crimps, cleaned the contacts with Caig De-Oxit and a toothbrush (gently), bent the contacts out slightly (being very careful), reassembled everything and VOILA! Back to normal. Took me about an hour and a half, mostly because the faceplate is glued to the inner panel around the display and I hunted for hidden screws and such. I didn't want to use brute force, but that's what it took. Now on to the 950... Anyone brave enough to try this can contact me for hints or help. kve777@gmail.com Kevin. I never bothered to fix it, then it lost the main left and right channnels, and so I got a Marantz AV7005.

I saw this post a long time ago, however, for the 1 percent of the time I changed the volume manually, it wasn't just worth the risk of potentially breaking a board.

There are a few brands out there that last a long time. I have a 26 year old NAD receiver that works flawlessly (in the bedroom system). I'm not sure the newer NAD stuff is of that quality, but the NAD of the 80's was top notch.

Time moves on and it came to a point where I needed HDMI support and wanted support for the latest codecs. If we were talking simple stereo audio, then I wouldn't have bothered and could have stuck with my old Dynaco pre-amp, but the 990 was my "home theater" solution. That space is a very quickly moving target. So if you want to play in the "home theater" game, you really do need to keep abreast of the latest technologies. A hardware refresh every 7-8 years isn't going to cut it. Best,

I called Outlaw and they will repair, cost about ~$200 with shipping. You know they really have excellent service and back what they sell. Since the 950 is almost 10 years old I decided to purchase an interim AVR. I found a Yamaha Rx-A700 (bottom Aventage Line) on sale at Amazon for $400 (list ~650). A nice feature with the A700 is it has all the pre-outs (7.2) to hook into my external Outlaw amp. It's backed by a 3 year warrantee and I will finally have HDMI switching. That should hold me until the 978 is out later this year. I thought about SR6006 but could not justify the extra expense and I would never hear the difference. Do you think I made a good choice? -Bob

Yes bobm you did. Since you stated that you are planning on purchasing the 978 when it is available, it was wise not too spend a lot of money now. The advantage you will have is that if the 978 is buggy or needs to be sent back to Outlaw, you can fall back on the Yamaha and have all of the connections that you need which is something you wouldn't be able to do with the 950. 950...R.I.P.

I know I really liked the 950. it was a game changer when it came out. All us poor audiophiles could finally move into separates at a much lesser cost than the current market offerings at the time. I am not sure the same can be said about the 978 unless it comes in ~$1K Interestingly, the Yamaha is not made in China but Malaysia. With all the talk on the forum about China I had to check this out. Is Yamaha the singer/songwriter of the AVR's, designed by Yamaha staff and built in Yamaha factories? I wonder if that is true? Hmmm, that might be a good tag line for them. -Bob
