Hi,

I use a Sonos unit as one audio source of my 990, via its OPT1 optical input. My system has 5 mono amps driving my 5 speakers, and a powered subwoofer for LFE.

I like to have a stereo listening mode that includes l+r and sub for critical listening. And I like to have a "all the speakers are playing" mode for parties etc. I have set this up as follows:

"5 Spkrs" config, with Optical 1 as its input, and surround mode set to 5CH STEREO.

"2 Spkrs" config, with Optical 1 as its input, and surround mode set to STEREO.

I've noticed that my subwoofer is much more engaged in 5CH STEREO mode, than in STEREO mode: If I put the system at approximately the same loudness to compare the two, the 5CH STEREO has a good bit more bass than STEREO for the same loudness setting. Is this by design, or perhaps I might have something not set up quite right?

Thanks,
-Jeff

I expect your seeing more subwoofer activity in 5CH STEREO Because your recieving the base below crossover point from all 5 speakers, not just from your main speakers.

I have my stereo mode set for upsample and configured for 2.1 speakers on my 990. You may have to adjust the crossover but the sub should be playing. Make sure the 990 sees that the sub is available in upsample mode and the crossover is set to 60 or 80hz.

Take a look at a post this past Fall about too much bass with multichannel audio.
