After years of thinking the 990 OSD , when activated , would only show black background with menu's, I was mistaken. Having to rearange my set up, low and behold I had OSD over program material I was viewing for 2 short days, ... then Today having to make some changes to 7.1 inputs from Oppo to 990, I lost OSD over program material I an viewing. I have not a clue of what I did to lose it, nor what I did to actually have it. I am connected to TV via Component Video from the 990 and from Oppo to 990. I also have the Oppo DVD p conected to TV via HDMI cable, but when making changes to the 990 menu's, I switch to Component Video on TV.

It was overlayered on Component video. I also have composite video conected and have toggled back and forth between the two without any success today. I will try again in the morning.

The menus will overlay on component, but the rest of the OSD will only sisplay via composit or S video.

On screen messages do not show on 480i component. They only show on composite and s-video. That's kind of a neat feature if you want to use a secondary display for control purposes. You do that, don't you Gonk?

On screen messages do not show on 480i component. They only show on composite and s-video. Thanks for the confirmation on that. Do you recall if the setup menu get overlaid onto the incoming video signal when using a 480i component input? That's kind of a neat feature if you want to use a secondary display for control purposes. You do that, don't you Gonk? I do not, although I've heard of other folks doing it. I do have a "secondary" display in my stereo system, though. It is a small LCD screen so I can see the video output from my player, which is great for player configuration, DVD-Audio menus, Blu-ray menus, DLNA server access, and CD or SACD text.

Are these OSD messages (separate from the setup menu's), that do not display on the component output, things like the volume, input source or lip sync delay that already display on the 990 display or something else?
I have a hard time visualizing a use for this, unless the 990 is hidden from normal view (in which case, its probably a great feature for those with a small secondary display)

Thanks for helping me figure this out. While viewing DVD ,the 990's OSD will display over program material through composite. However when I switch over to 7.1 anolog, even with composite selected, it will not, comes up black screen. This puzzles me, yet I realy have no need to see program material when listening to DVD-A or SACD.

The 7.1 D input does have a dedicated composite input, but is the player's composite output connected to that input or to the input assigned "DVD"?

If the 990 is outside the view of the listener, the on screen display can be of some help, but not much. I find the really benifit in a secondary display is allowing you to due setup and maintenance sorts of things without usng the main display. this saves a lot of silly questions from "she who must be obeyed".

This on screen display (OSD) discussion highlights the need for what I requested in a previous post about features to include in the 978/998. I believe that both systems should incorporate an option to allow for a "ghost" OSD toggle option over the video source such that you can see the semi transparent OSD and/or setup menus and still see the video program material. This will make access to the OSD and setup menues more accessible and convenient, and it will likely eliminate many wife acceptance factor (WAF) and "she who must be obyed" issues. I currently cannot view the OSD because my 990 is in a cabinet, so I have to go and open the cabinet to view the OSD; and for the setup menus, I have my universal remote programed to turn on the setup menus and switch my video source, but it is all in black screen and quite disruptive, and thus I only do it rarely.

Is what you are saying is that I need to use a Y connector from the Oppo's composite out running two cables , one to DVD input and the other to 7.1 input

I have the Oppo DV-980H connected to the 990 via Component video DVD inputs .... and Composite video output from the Oppo to input on the 990. When the 990 is switched to 7.1 in component input it shows only a black screen, no album or track info. As you describe, Component Video works fine for both DVD and 7.1 minus the OSD over source being viewed. Would using the 980H's s-video output to 990's s-video give me what i am seeking . ?

I do have it connected that way ( Component ) but there are times when I want to access OSD over program material, this is the reason for connecting via coposite video.
