Polarity will cause the speakers to be out of phase and the bass to be muddled. It shouldn't cause static. Check your wiring closely and make sure that all of the strands of wire are connected to the speakers terminals and the amp outputs so none are touching and thing other than the terminals.

I used a spl meter (radio shack now has a digital for $50, $40 if you send a survey) and calibrated beheringer EQ's and a feedback destroyer,using a test disc. From there use the spl to adjust speaker sound levels. Whala, all smooth and balanced.
