According to this page, the latest iteration of the AppleTV still has an optical output between the HDMI output and the ethernet port - that's why I suggested it. This page also lists an optical output. Using that output is preferable to relying on the TV to feed the HDMI audio signal out to the TV's optical port, which (depending on the TV) may or may not work.
