Hi Outlaws, it’s been quite a while. Well it’s time for a new display. I can’t wait any longer for the Sony XBR CRT to die. I would like your help in deciding first what technology, and then which brand gives the best performance. I am looking at something around 50 to 60 inches. I will be able to control the light in the room, and will be sitting dead center, about 9 to 10 feet from the display. What do you think?

Check out the Panasonic TC-65S2. Plasma 65 inch 600 hz subfield display. I watch a lot of sports and to me the plasmas have the best picture and the least motion artifacts. It's a 2D display so if you want 3D this ain't it.

I've been out of the market for a couple of years (I'm very happy with my Pioneer 5080) but even now I'd limit my search to plasma displays. I think they consistently produce the best picture. I have a couple of suggestions that you might consider regardless of which type of display you get. First, your viewing distance of 9 to 10 feet will make it very difficult to actually tell the difference between a 1080p and 720p display. The range of signals the display can accept may be a more important factor and a 720p display will cost less. Second, I'd have any new display calibrated by an ISF certified technician. These folks (get a tech from ISF's list) can get into the service menu of your new display to make the necessary adjustments so your display is accurately displaying colors and grey scale. The cost will be around $300 but it was really worth it. Enjoy your search for a new display!

I've been very happy with my Samsung LN-46-950A, which is nearly 2 years old. I can't tell you about plasma, but if you go for LCD I'd look at LED backlights that adapt to dark areas. One of the complaints I heard about LCDs was that the blacks were not great. Not the case with the 950A, and I suspect the newer Samsungs with variable backlighting. But those tend to be at the high end of the price scale.
