The cheapest universal (DVD-A/SACD) player worth mentioning is the Pioneer 563. The video performance is reportedly not up to par with some of the more expensive universals. Denon's got the DVD-2200 for around $600 and the DVD-2900 for about $1000 (both are likely available for less online, but you may not get the warranty with them). Yamaha's got a player due out shortly (the DVD-S1500 in black and the DV-S5770 in silver) for about $400.

Here's a a system with Aeons, Cinema, and Scripts using a 950 and 770. I've also got a friend with a Model 950 running Aeons off a two-channel Classe and a Cinema off a 7100 (the Aeons and Classe came a year or so before the 950, 7100, and Cinema).

Thanks for the info. How can I find the owner of the above system? Need some input from the user or your other friend for that matter. Have been looking at the Denon 2900 and read reviews. Anyone have any comments on the Denon? Is it good value to go any higher up the $$$ chain?? Is SACD and DVD Audio something to strive for?? Or what else??

The second line in the table below the picture at the ML Owner's site is a link to an e-mail address.

There are a number of 2900 users floating around the forum here. It's been pretty well reviewed. The next step up the chain is a pretty pricey move - Denon's 5900 lists for about $2000. If you do much music listening, both DVD-A and SACD are great formats (and a universal player does offer the benefit of avoiding the entire format war problem by letting you use either format). If your system is solely used for movie watching and you don't expect that to change, then you could opt for a good quality progressive scan DVD player and omit both SACD and DVD-A.

i demoed all the denons, and didnt see any difference on video performance until you got to the 5900. that is what people say about the 2900vs2200, better video, but they were the same in my eyes (better than 20/20 :-)). i got the 910, didnt want multichannel support and am glad i did.
