A hypothetical question for those in the know:

If I decided to wait for the holy grail, aka Outlaw 997, to arrive would the Trinnov optimizer work as well at adjusting a flat frequency response for a sub(s) as a built in or independent sub equalizer (the likes of a Sunfire TS-EQ or a Velodyne DD or the Velodyne SMS)?

Nobody knows. Possibly over at the Sherwood-Newcastle site, someone has actually heard Trinnov. I would not call the 997 the holy grail except it is almost as elusive. So far no-one has confessed to know how Trinnov will affect the subs and if it will integrate with outboard LFE processors.

I have yet to read a good answer to this question. I am delaying the purchase of a dedicated LFE processor until the 997 arrives, in the hope that it won't be needed.

It's a really hard question to answer without having actually used and listened to Trinnov. People have paired products like the SMS-1 in conjunction with room correction software like Audyssey, but most people didn't.

I already have 2 x LFM-1, 1 x SMS-1,....and my old friend Model 1050 as pre. They have working good for the last 3-4 years., but my plan is to upgrade it (Mod. 1050) to a pre/pro due to I have 4 HDMI sources.

I have the same question,...how the SMS-1 will work together with the latest pre/pro's with auto speakers calibrations. How would be the "integration or blending" to co-exist both together? or maybe I will not need the SMS-1,...(????)
Some people at AVS forum have a digital bass management, experimenting with the new pre/pro's.
It is confusing for me their opinions about the integration (how?, when?, before or after?, etc), so I guess I have to experiment also after getting the upgrade.

Tricky question. I suppose that if the pre/pro or reciever's auto EQ works well enough, the SMS-1 becomes redundant. If it still needs some maual tweaks in the bass, the SMS does that very well.
I don't have any auto EQ, but I would think that I would place the SMS between th pre/pro and the sub, run the auto EQ, then use the SMS to see how flat the response is. If it's to your liking, sell the SMS. If not, you can use the SMS for your "second degree smoothing".

Yes,...I guess this is what I would be doing at the end,....new pre/pro> SMS-1> subs.....then make a fine tune,....but until then,....that is my concern,....
I would like to keep the SMS-1, It does a terrific job,...But! we will see.

If the SMS-1 is between your pre-pro and sub(s), with the idea that you'll run pre-pro based Audyssey or Trinnov EQ, and if your planned use of the SMS-1 is to fine tune the bass after the pre-pro EQ is complete, then it's likely best if the SMS-1 is 'reset' before running the pre-pro EQ. (see the middle of page 25 of the Outlaw's Guide to SMS-1) Of course if your very satisfied with the SMS-1 settings you previously made, you'll want to write them down before you reset the SMS-1, in case you need to return to those exact settings. (If the SMS-1 already has done some shaping of the response curve, then the pre-pro may try to 'correct' what the SMS-1 has done.)

I'm agree with you bb4tb,....the SMS-1 has to be reset first.
Currently it has the calibration based on the 1050 / SMS-1 /LFM-1(2)'s Combo,...of course, I will use the same front speakers (PSB Image Series T65).
I have no idea what results I will get until then, but I have to try to see If I will keep the SMS-1 or no

Neglecting the SMS-1 and instead thinking about a great sub with its own purpose-built internal EQ capability, my inclination would be to let the sub's EQ do the heavy lifting first, and then let the processor's EQ go to work on the overall system - including the now-EQ'd sub.

To some extent that's what sort of what I've done in my main HT.

I leave the initial bass management (of all but the LFE channel) up to an Outlaw ICBM-1 with the bass management low frequencies getting directed to an SMS-1 feeding three of my powered subs which are treated and EQ'd as if they were a single unit by the SMS-1. The LFE channel feeds an even more potent single sub with lots of tweakability. I've used the SMS-1's display capability to use that sub's onboard EQ capability to smooth out its response. And then Audyssey sits on top of the whole shebang.

Other than the fact that I don't like what Audyssey then does in the non-bass frequency range (and hence I don't use it) I think combining these capabilities in this way makes most sense in my set-up. It's certainly much better (in the bass regions) than Audyssey alone - perhaps due to my multiple sub set up.

Maybe Trinnov will be better.
