Blank or green screen after watching DVD on PS3

I have an Onkyo 886 pre amp hooked up to a Sony KDSR-XBR160 (60" HDTV) via HDMI. I also have a Sony DVD jukebox, a HD DVD player and a DirecTV Hi Def DVR which are all hooked up to my 886 via HDMI. When watching a movie, regardless if it is a Blu Ray or standard DVD, at the end of the movie my screen often either goes completely green, completely black (no image) or the left 1/3rd of the screen goes completely green. If I use the PS3 remote or sixaxis controller, I can hear the beeps from the PS3 XMB as I move left or right but there is no image on the screen. If I switch sources, I get the same result. The oonly way to fix it is to turn the 886 off and back on again. I posted this on the AVS forums, and 1 person responded that it sounded like a HDMI handshake issue. The HDMI cable going from the PS3 to the 886 is a 4 footer from bluejeans cable, and the one going from the 886 to the TV is a 35 foot monoprice. Here is a link to a photo of the screen turning partially gree. Scroll down about 6 posts; http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=584936&page=709 Any suggestions ( I know Gonk will)?

Can you shorten the run to the TV temporarily to see if the problem cures?

I will try and set the video processing to bypass, I never even knew that was possible. And I cannot shorten the run to the TV.

I did, what I saw was the ability to set it to "through", instead ofa specific resolution. I will keep looking at the Outlaw guide.
It was already set to "through". I did change cables and last night it did not give me the blank or green screen.
Maybe that was it, but both HDMI cables are blue jean brand.
Who knows.....

I will give that a shot. Thank you. Both cables are blue jean, I will continue to watch some movies (like I need a reason to do that!) to see if the cable takes care of it. But I will also check what you described on the pages you cited.

I watched several movies over the weekend and still no problems.
I will chalk this to a finicky cable.

Its back. I will do more "adjusting" and checking out pages 18 & 23 if see if any settings make a change.
In the meantime, I have submitted a request to Onkyo and Outlaw about a possible repair. I did not buy my 886 from Onkyo, but if they are an authorized seller I would rather ship it to them than to Onkyo (if a local shop is unable).

Some of the other posts I've read indicate that these types of problems go away when the HDMI cable is unplugged and plugged back in although they may come back. Some possible things to look at are:
1. Bi-metallic problems which occur if you mate different types of metals (e.g. gold to tin). I try to match gold-to- gold and tin-to-tin just to be safe. These types of problems usually take time to surface though so I'm guessing this isn't your poblem.
2. Impedance mismatch. This could be a problem given your long run. Parts Express advertises an HDMI Stabilizer that "corrects" impedance mismatches. For the $15-20 it might be worth a try. Note that they also have an HDMI Extender/Amplifier for around $30. I've never tried either of these products so I can't say how well they might work.
3. Interference. Have you looked at your cable run? Is it next to power wires, gas pipes, water pipes, wireless routers, etc? You want to stay away from metal and/or electronics.
That's about all I can think of at the moment.
Good Luck.

I have not had the issue pop up again now for several days. Weird. I just watched 3 straight episodes of Lost (season 5) that I rented from Blockbuster on my PS3 and when it was done it went right to the PS3 menu like a charm. If I keep scratching my head on this there wont be anything left up there!

FWIW;
I rebooted the 886 and it has been flawless ever since. I also got a new HDTV last week, perhaps the connection at the TV was also part of the problem.
Best Buy warrantied out my Sony KDS-XBR1 60" and replaced it with a Panasonic TC-P65S1 65" Plasma.
While SD stuff was better on the Sony, this plasma kicks butt with HD material!
