This may be a silly question, but will the SMS-1 have any value when used with the 997? Or will the Trinnov Optimizer make it irrelevant?

I would expect Trinnov to reduce the need for SMS-1. I can still see a way for the two to be used together - as long as you configure the SMS-1 first and then run Trinnov - but I don't know how much benefit it will provide.

It's not a silly question at all, it is an excellent question which could be expanded to include all bass specific control systems like the SMS-1. I don't think anyone can answer it just yet, especially since the Trinnov implementation is apparently still being finalized in the Sherwood. How much bass control is needed varies greatly for each application, certainly depending on room acoustics, subwoofer(s) type and location, and seating area, among others. Given the unique design of the Trinnov, it may be challenging to be able to have it work optimally with a stand alone bass control system.
