Now hold on, pardner! Are you "Assuming" that Gonk is a Beta tester? Come on now. Give him the benefit of the doubt. He has no room in his system for any more gear, let alone the time to evaluate such equipment given that he is an Oppo tester. Sheesh! Conflict of interest....or....something like that.
(So Gonk....looking forward to your report!!)

I wonder if there's any chance that the 997 won't have the same HDMI handshake issues with computers that most AVRs and Pre/Pros suffer from? I'm still waiting on a unit that will plug and play with my mac mini and actually provide the same quality image as when I connect directly to my TV.

I can make a guess, but it's not going to be one that makes you feel any better. If HDCP is involved (which is required by HDMI), I would consider the potential for handshake issues to be unavoidable. In almost every case, it's not HDMI producing the handshaking problems, it's HDCP. And if there's a standard I have less respect for than HDMI, it's HDCP.

Scott,
Now that it has officially been announced that beta units are out, can you post a front and/or rear photo of the new 997?

Is there a preorder list for the 997?
If so, how do you get on it.
I'm on the 997 email list if that matters.

I'm on the 997 email list if that matters. They haven't finalized the price yet, I wouldn't expect preordering until that's happened.

They haven't finalized the price yet, I wouldn't expect preordering until that's happened. I'm pretty sure the price is finalized: $1399, with a $200 discount for owners of 990's and 970's (and I think a $100 discount for owners of 950's). What, you mean just because neither of them work properly? Sheesh.
Hey, but with v1.4 they're enabling ethernet! Wait...what? Yeah, it's pretty rude of me to want compatibility testing or strict and well-defined standards to implement from HDCP. :p And don't even get me started on HDMI v1.4. It will bestow upon us ethernet (although no explanation yet as to how ethernet's star topography will be integrated or why we want to replace a cable that offers a functional locking connector with one that doesn't), extra video bandwidth that no standards yet exist to make use of (which goes well with the deep color they added in v1.3 that no standards can support natively), and yet another small connector design (which replaces the small connector they created in v1.3).

My bad - I remember the original email from last year had said "at least $1400", and since the site still says "estimated", I'd thought the ball was still in the air on that one. Pessimism rules until Wednesday afternoon :p
