I cant belive I watched it all...Mega shark vs. Giant octopus on SyFy sat. I think this one is up there with Plan 9. In one scene a huge shark leaps from the ocean and bites a 747 flying at 20,000 feet. He then drags it to its doom under water. A guy on the plane squeels "BIG FISH"! Ive noticed SyFy is using a lot of cheezy C.G. in its lame"O" movies. Its bad, extremly bad. I'm glad my friend is paying for this crappy tv and not me anymore.

SyFy is a constant source of made-for-cable sci-schlock. Amazing that the network that brings you BSG also runs this stuff...and if you enjoyed it, look for Yeti, or Frankenfish, or Dog Soldiers, or Blood Monkey, or Shark Swarm...you'll thank yourself. Really.
Gonk, you could be on to something...a whole new MST3K series could run on SyFy originals alone.

I just watched GI Joe ( I know, what could I expect ) Effects, and graphics were great, screen play was embaracingly bad. Inglorous Bastards was just about as bad and unfortunately I bought that one instead of using Netflix. On the other hand, Star Trek was great and both the new X-men and Transformers movies were beter than I expected. Great Debaters was pretty good. This thread needs some participation.

I agree KOYAAN it does need some participation. After all arent movies and music the reason for spending all of this money on this great gear. I just purchased "District 9" and the visuals where awesome and the acting was not bad for having no name actors in it. Very Entertaining. Worth Watching.

I too was really disappointed in GI Joe. This should have been a great flick but it just didn't work for me. Star Trek was great and I totally aggree with Gonk about McCoy and Scotty.

Keeping with the topic of very bad flick, I'd have to cast my vote for Battlefield Earth. Maybe there's a mega shark somewhere that will leap out of the ocean and eat this film.
Straying from the topic: Star Trek was really good. Casino Royale was visually outstanding.
Thanks for the tip on GI Joe: I won't waste my time.

Can't say that I've encountered Crank2 or High Voltage. There are, of course, some truly awful movies in the blue movie,Teen and mayhem markets, but I think the worst I've seen that passed itself off as regular cinema were: 1. The Druids 2. Ghosts of Mars 3. The Last Templar

I will probably see Avatar again in the theater and I'll eventually buy a BluRay copy because it is a visual treat but its plot is very worn. Hollywood regularly trots out movies that bash the human race over its stewardship of our planet. Do you remember Silent Running? Avatar combines human's disregard for the planet and another race in much the same way Dances with Wolves did. The only twist is the "indians" won in Avatar. It is a good thing it was eye candy otherwise I'd have fallen asleep.

I'd like to see Avatar but given that I can't take the boy I'll probably have to wait for it to come out on blu-ray.
As far as stinkers go I'm adding "Sphere" to my list. I re-gifted the thing at a family re-gifting Christmas a few years back and the darn thing has turned up every year since.

Bad movies are disheartening, but bad movies based on good books are the worst. I love me some Neil Gaiman, and I sure hated Stardust. Yawn.
PS, Star Trek was good, but I waited to see it until I saw the At the Movies guys call it one of the best movies of the year. Maybe not that good. Plus, if the Nero guy went back in time chasing spock, instead of waiting 29 years for him, why didn't he just, I don't know, try to save his damn planet?

Right there with you. I did my english thesis on Stranger in a Strange Land, and Lazarus long remains one of my favorite literary characters. I have a friend who swears the troopers movie is the pinnacle of black comedy. Sure - I just laugh and laugh when I see doogie howser/barney in his leather SS outfit at the end. Plus, they have big spaceships that can't manage to avoid flying bug poop (twice!), and oversized bb guns for the infantry.

Would Star Trek be a good movie even if I have never really watched any other Star Trek. I didn't not watch it because I did not like it but that I never got into it. I guess what I am asking is would I be lost by watching it or does not having seen the other movies and show really matter?

Despite my opinion of the movie as a whole, there is an ingenious little plot point that makes any longtime fan of the franchise understand that this is not a retelling of ST canon, and clears the way to tell all new stories without concern for violating established history. Of course, since they're starting from the beginning of the Captain Kirk story, as it were, anyone new to the story will find it pretty simple to jump in without missing anything. JJ Abrams may not be great at characterization outside of serialized TV, but he can really work up a decent plot outline.

Would Star Trek be a good movie even if I have never really watched any other Star Trek. Yes, it's still a good movie, made for people that know little to nothing about 'Star Trek'. It's like 'Casino Royale' was for people that knew nothing about James Bond or 'Batman Begins' for people that knew nothing about...well, you know.

One thing I alaways liked about the old Star Trek was at some point Captain Kirk alaways needed more power from the engines. Scotty would tell him the dilithium crystels were deterorating and the ship was going to break up. One time the engines got shut off and Kirk told Scotty just to turn em back on and Scotty says "I canna change the laws of physics- I got ta have 30 minutes" We used to laugh so hard.

I read some reviews on 'Star Trek' that dissed the movie as 'unfaithful' to the original. As a long time fan of the genre I really liked it. There were enough character references in the new film to the old series that made it fun.

I read some reviews on 'Star Trek' that dissed the movie as 'unfaithful' to the original. Star Trek was ground breaking becuase it was a prime time science fiction series with a racially integrated multi-national team with some strong female roles in a time when the Russians were THE enemy, the race wars were still going on and women stayed at home and had babies. There was still some buzz in the 80's when a woman (Tasha Yar) was the head of security in Next Gen. So no, the latest installment wasn't faithful as a social commentary like the original series but I thought it a fine movie and tied in to the original characters well. It also can stand on it's own which not all (few?) sequels can. The Blu-ray version is both visually and sonically outstanding. I'd give it a pretty solid 7 out of 10.

I was never a Trekkie. Very rarely watched the original series and was not really a big fan of the Star Trek movies prior this one. I have two good friends who were BIG fans. Remembering the characters funnies and quirks. I was totally out of the conversation when these guys were together talking about the show. I on the other hand could care less.
However THIS movie...Star Trek...was a very likable movie. Great action, special effects were good and I enjoyed the story line. This time I was interested in the characters. So much so that I was asking questions to my Trekkie friends about how these characters personalities matched the original show characters' personalities.
This movie is a keeper. I do not buy that many Blu-Ray discs' but Star Trek is going to be another exception.

Wow. "Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus"? That's one that I'd expect to see prefaced by "MST3K Presents" just based on the title alone... Ha! MST3k...one of the most amusing things ever to have hit the airwaves... Priceless entertainment.
