Does the 7700 use a toroidal transformer?
Anybody know the voltage/current requirements of the transformer's secundary?
We have 230VAC in Europe, and I have several 120V transformers, but it won't do to apply them to such a power hungry amp...
That's why I was thinking of maybe replacing the power transformer by a 230VAC type.
(I'm an electronics technician so don't worry about me setting the house on fire...).
I already own a few Outlaws (acquired through an American friend) and I love what they do besides sitting in their holes and shooting at people...

The 7700 uses a pair of toroidal transformers, actually. Scroll down to the middle of this page and you can see some pictures of a 7500's internals (the 7700 is similar, just with two more amp channels inside).

As for the voltage and current requirements on the secondary side of the transformers, I haven't a clue - you'd be best off giving Outlaw a call and quizzing them on it.

Thanks gonk,
I'm glad they used toroidals, as these are much easier to replace; I could even try to replace the primary winding.
I am aware this would jeopardize the warranty, but hey, that's life...
It sure is the cheapest 200W*7 amp on the planet!

Hey, if you know what you're doing, more power to you (or different voltage to you, as the case may be). smile

Doesn't ATI custom wind their own transformers? I seem to recall reading that somewhere. Just out of curiosity, what type of transformer were you thinking of using as a replacement?

Cheers,

@ Ritz
On second thought, because of the transformers probably having multiple windings, I will just let the toroids sit where they are and series the primaries, getting 230VAC effectively!
It is possible to add sec windings to a toroid, as they are the outside layer, but the first solution is easier...
There may be some soft start deriving AC from the primaries which is set to 115VAC, but I'm sure I can work that out.
(Maybe some Honcho Gunslinger can provide me with the primary circuit, so I can start thinking...?)
The toroids may get a littlebit warmer, because of 50Hz operation, but I think this won't be a big problem since my FLH+FLL-C-FRH-FRL-SR-SL application has only 2 power hungry channels: the two bass biamped parts of the Front channels.

Barend,

What are you trying to accomplish with the mod? It's been about 20 years since my last electrical engineering courses...so I'm a bit rusty...er...OK...a LOT rusty. :-)

He's trying to run the amp on 230V/50Hz power without using a separate step-down transformer to produce 120V for it.
