Still think I may have burned up a compression driver or four. Ordered new ones. The JBL tech rep told me how to install them and the inspection process. Will post what I find.

It has been a few weeks with the new diaphrams in. It does sound cleaner, maybe a little brighter too. but not harsh. I found fluid spaltters on the inside of one of the old diaphrams. I carefully cleaned the voice coil groove in the magnet. (I did not spill any fluid. And what is that stuff? It is a brown colored oil.) then reassembled the drivers. Was very easy. Two tools use where a #2 Phillips and a 1/4" open end wrench.

I have been pondering adding a subwoofer. I only use this system for music so I am not sure it is worth the expense.

The JBL ES250PW looks interesting. It is 2.4 ghz wireless. 12", 400 watts. About $1 / watt.

Also saw a Cadence XSUB-12 (CSX-12)- 350 WATT Powered Subwoofer for $180. Quite tempted with the Cadence due to the price. The auction ends soon too. Also do not want to wind up with a sub that is too weak for the rest of my system and or the size of the workshop.

* Looking at the Bstock here. Not sure I could do better than the LFM-1 Plus B-Stock there.

For an experiment I put the 8" Definitive Technology sub out in the shop to see what it would add. After some adjustment to the x-over (60)and finding the sweet spot for the sub, I was sure I had to have one for the shop. It really completes the package.
I had 4 subs on my list of possibilities.
The three above and a HSU, which is very very close to the Outlaw sub. Maybe even the same inside?? I went with the JBL ES250PW because of the price, only 200 bucks, it's a refurbished unit from the harmon. I am sure it is nowhere near the Outlaw or HSU for sound and quality.
It took more adjusting of the x-overs on both the sub and 970. I set it at 100 on the 970 and 60-70 on the sub with the power at the 1 o-colock position. it blends in better than the 8". I can also hear the 12" sub every where in the shop and I cant say the same for the 8".
I am lovin it. Someday will upgrade to 990 if / when the 970 dies. The 990 has better DAC but the 970 is no slouch. I love it.
When I was a kid in the 60's, the radio was my toy. Silver plastic, 9 volt heart. It still is today.

Got some ferrofluid from ferotech. Going to add a drop in the coil gap for the compression drivers that got new diaphrams. I lost a little bit in the process. I sent them the spec sheet for the drivers and they made me a 3cc batch. Will post the results. The speakers do still sound great right now but have more "ring" to them than they did.

Just wanted to say my 970 is still rockin'. No issues and it is in a harsh environment. Was going to step up to the 990 but I see it has been put out to pasture too. I'll just keep on rockin' with the 970 as long as it stays alive.
The "Revorgandrum" CD sounds soo good on this system.

Update:
My trusty 970 is starting to drop out more often latley so I got a 990 to replace it. I cant tell if the 990 sounds better because I only get a blue light and no display, no operation. thermistor?
I will call Outlaw support Monday. I would rather get it working than get a refund...

Last night my old 970 played without issue and sounded gtreat. So 970 is back in while I get the 990 sorted.
