Two possibilities come to mind. One would be overall cable length, which might be enough to cause problem with 1080p (likely exascerbated by going through a switch). What's the total cable length? The other possibility would be HDCP problems with the AE1000u, but that would happen at any resolution and is probably not the issue here.
