I just recenly updated with the new software for my 970. So far everthing seems to be working except for one thing. When I am watching any DVD the OSD will display the surround mode about every 10 seconds which did not happen before the software update. This happens with auto poll on or off. When I am watching from my sat. receiver this does not happen and works normal. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this my be happening. Should I reload the software???

Is there any interruption in audio when this happens? Can you check to see if the digital audio cable is loose? It sounds almost as if the DVD player's digital output is "flickering" somehow and causing the 970 to re-acquire the signal over and over again.

There is no interruption in the audio when the OSD comes on. I checked the Optical connection and it is tight. I also have a RCA coaxial, so I changed the connection type and it also displays in the same way. I am beginning to wonder if it is the DVD player. Is there anything else I can check before I try another DVD player.

I can't think of anything else. Does it happen with any DVD, or just one in particular?

Jamesgang4 or Gonk, I am having the same proplem with my 1070. When I watch a DVD from my Denon player the OSD comes on quite frequently for no apparent reason. Has anyone figured out why yet?
Thanks,
Tom

I'm not sure about the why - might be worth a call or e-mail to Outlaw. As an interim work-around (a sort of "non-solution" solution), you can go into the setup menu, go to INPUT SETTINGS, go to the DVD input, and change OSD from ON to OFF. It will disable the OSD pop-ups for that input at all times, which may not be desirable in your case but will at least avoid the nuisance pop-ups while Outlaw gets back with you.

Thought I'd post here...I don't get any OSD when using my DVD player with the 970. OSD is set to on and I'm using component video (which I thought was compatible with OSD). I had the setup the same using a 990 and no OSD either...maybe it's my DVD player?

With the 970, the on-screen setup menu will only be visible via component video output when a composite or s-video source is active (the menu is overlayed before the signal is transcoded to component). With the 990, the on-screen setup menu is available with component video inputs because the 990 replaces the incoming signal with a 480i black screen and draws the menu onto that.

In both cases, on-screen display "pop-ups" (volume, input, surround mode) are not available with component video inputs because neither unit will overlay data on top of a component video input.

The OSD will pass through component if and only if it's not a progressive signal...The OSD will only pass at 480i...you might want to look at that...

Ahhh...well, I only have OSD when I change my TV input to s-video. I have s-video and DVI in from my satellite receiver to the 970, s-video and dvi outs to the TV. My DVD is set up for 480p output. I never watch TV via s-video..the picture is so much better with component or DVI. I'd really like the 'pop-ups' since the display on the 970 is so small. Wish I'd been able to hang on to the 990.

I find I have other problems...I can't get any OSD at all anymore. In addition, I can't get the menu to accept Dolby Digital as a surround format. I used the OSD yesterday via my s-video, but tonight I can't bring it up at all. Also, if I do access the menu via the display on the preamp, I lose the audio for the source I'm watching on TV. I have to power off the unit to get the audio back. Any ideas? I'm starting to think I should have kept the 990 despite my wife's objections of the size.

I'm not sure what the story is with the OSD not appearing via s-video or the loss of audio. Can you get other video signals through the 970?

The SURR MODE portion of the Input Settings Menus is not ever a complete list - it is restricted to the modes available for the input in question at the time you are in the menu. So if you don't have a Dolby Digital signal coming in to that input, the SURR MODE list will not offer Dolby Digital as an option. Personally, I wouldn't worry about this, as you can use the Dolby, DTS, and Stereo buttons to select the modes you prefer while listening to the various possible modes and it will remember those preferences for each of the different cases (something that you're not going to be able to do from the menu anyway, as it only displays the setting for the format currently being processed).

gonk,
Thanks as always for your reply. I got up this morning and was able to get in to the OSD. I was able to scroll through all the available surround formats with no problem. I just switched from Dish to DirecTV a couple days ago, and was watching an HD program last night which indicated the audio was in Dolby Digital 5.1. My connection for the audio input is an optical connection, and the default mode is Dolby PLX-II-C. In the past with Dish, when I switched to a Dolby Digital source it switched automatically. That's why I was at a loss last night when we were watching and it wasn't in DD. I couldn't get the buttons on the remote to accept DD. I checked this morning and my DD on the satellite receiver wasn't set to 'on'. One problem solved!! Still at a loss as to why I'd have to turn off the 970 though when I change an audio selection. I'll keep on eye on that and see how it goes.
