i just downloaded the beta 970 firmware upgrade. it said it was successful, but all my setting were still intact. is that normal?? so i reset my 970 with the menu and mute buttons and that cleared all my settings. buy how do i tell what version of firmware i have? i do not have my 970 hooked up to a display yet so how do i tell which version i have? also what's the difference between the menu and mute reset and the reset in the back of the 970 with a paper clip? thanks for your replies.

I'll take your questions in order. The firmware update does not automatically clear your settings, as Scott of Outlaw confirmewd here: http://ubb.outlawaudio.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/ubb/get_topic/f/40/t/000151.html#000001 Pressing menu-mute on the front panel will display your current firmware but I do not believe there ia a way to display your current firmware without a display. The menu-mute reset clears all your settings. The paperclip reset is more like a reboot and does not clear anything. Hope this helps, Tony.

I'm in the same position: I went through the upgrade process, which appeared to be successful according to the PC messages. I was also surprised to see that my settings had not changed, since the instructions indicated that they would.
Now I see that they should not be reset by pressing the reset switch on the rear, but only if I do a menu-mute reset. But is this actually necessary? I'd rather not go to the trouble of reapplying my settings if I don't have to.
How do I check whether the upgrade was applied successfully? The previous posts indicate that pressing menu + mute will cause it to be displayed, but they also suggest that all my settings will be lost. Do I have to lose my settings just to check the firmware version?
It seems like this should be basic information that is supplied with the instructions for the upgrade, but if you guys can help me out, that's the next best thing.

I should have been more specific...
Menu+Mute will display the current firmware revision ; when you do so you are prompted to press 1 to clear all your settings. Don't press 1 and nothing is reset.
I agree about the instructions not being incredibly clear about this, but it's one of the few documentation shortcomings I have seen from the Outlaws...
Best of luck, Tony.

Thanks for the clarification, Tony - I was too timid to try Menu+Mute to find out if I would be given the option of clearing my settings or not.
For others who haven't done this yet, you must simultaneously push the "Mute" and "Menu" buttons on the front panel, not the remote. The current firmware version will be displayed on screen (assuming you have OSD turned on).
So ... I have mcp-ot10700701121419. Is this in fact the new (Jan 07) upgrade? Is there a reference somewhere that matches the on-screen version number to dated releases?
thanks, Bruce

No worries Bruce, better safe than sorry.
mcp-ot10700701121419 is the Jan '07 update.
The date of the file is a six digit number in yymmdd format in the middle of the string immediately after the '1070', so this version is dated January 12th.
mcp-ot1070 070112 1419
This is the same version I am running, downloaded from the link in the Jan. 29th announcement. The file I loaded was 970_011707.hex
Hope this helps...

Thanks again, Tony. And once again, shouldn't this information be posted somewhere on the Outlaw site, like on a FAQ page somewhere? I haven't found it if it is.
Last question - why do our 970 upgrades have the "1070" string in them? I suppose both models run the same core software, so maybe the same code is in both upgrades (maybe wrapped with different loaders or something ...).
