In a lot of cases, the stereo bypass serves as an extra input on the stereo unit. That input bypasses the stereo pre-amp's volume control. You would connect the surround receiver or processor's left and right pre-amp outputs to the bypass inputs on the two-channel unit. When you select the bypass input, the stereo's volume control is skipped and you operate the surround receiver.
