I bought a Denon DVD-1930ci player recently in addition to my 970, and the code in the manual doesn't seem to work. I tried the scan for codes feature, but either it didn't work or I gave up after a couple hundred punches.

Does anyone have an idea what the code might be?

The 0490 code in the manual seems to only work for older Denon players (since 0490 is also a code for Panasonic players, I suspect it works with Denon's earlier players that were based on a Panasonic platform). You might also try 0059, but I think Denon may have started using a different set of codes in their newest players so that one may not work either.
