The 970 doesn't overlay data onto a component video input because the signal bandwidth is too great to be able to do so without degrading the picture quality. More expensive processors still suffer from this limitation, but work around it by blanking the screen (ignoring the input) and drawing the menu on that blank screen). The 970 does overlay menu data onto composite and s-video inputs, and that data goes along for the ride when transcoded to component for the component monitor output. This way, you can get to the 970's OSD menu simply by selecting an input that isn't configured to use a component video source (such as the front panel input) before pulling up the OSD menu. The LMC-1 behaves the same way, by the way.
