I got my 970 today. B-stock. It won't output to component RGB. I can see the menu only by using S-Video.

I tried rebooting the machine by pressing the "menu-mute" buttons, and I get "mcp-ot10700602091310" on the OSD. The remote no longer works except to turn the unit off, and then only occasionally works to turn it off.

I tried to load the latest 970 firmware three times. The software loader said it had successfully loaded all three times. (laptop with a REAL serial connection!)

However, I can't get it to work, and it keeps showing the "mcp-ot1070..." serial number. Looks like someone tried to load the 1070 firmware into the 970 box.

Is it completely fried? Time to go back to Outlaw service?

Update: I had an IR blaster that was keeping several of my remotes inoperative. I unplugged the IR blaster, and the remote now works.

Still not sure about the firmware issue. On my "low bandwidth" RGB input, I get perfect video. On my "high bandwidth" RGB input, I get lots of white fuzzy lines.

I found a similar thread on the 1070 forum.

http://ubb.outlawaudio.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/ubb/get_topic/f/37/t/000143.html

So, I have the latest firmware, obviously, but is it a problem to have 1070 software on a 970?

Am I stuck until the next firmware release?

First, the 1070 and 970 should both work properly, although you should be able to get the 970 firmware from the bottom of this page (it sounds like you have gotten the 1070 updater by accident).

One thing to make sure of on the high-bandwidth component input (and you likely have done at least some of this) is that there aren't any cabling problems - which could be loose connections, reversed connections, bad cables, or cables running parallel to power cords. If none of those fix the problem and we can't come up with any other ideas to try today, I'd recommend giving Outlaw a call on Monday.

Thanks gonk!

I've now gotten everything to work except for the component switching. I had my 1080i DVD player on the 970's DVD input using component, the Tivo on the 970's Video 1 using S-Video and the Sony PS2 on the 970's Video 3 using component. I think the PS2 is using 480i component.

I plugged the 970 into the 1080i component input on my TV and I only get several horizontal lines of jibberish on the Tivo input and the PS2 input, but the DVD passes through just fine. I get no OSD. So, the 970 will pass a 1080i component signal through, but not with OSD.

If I connect the 970 into the "normal" 480i component input of the TV, I get the OSD, I get the Tivo (which means it's converting it from S-Video to Component in 480i) and I get the PS2, all with OSD. However, the DVD is completely garbled. It won't downconvert the 1080i component signal into a 480i component signal.

Basically, if I could get the 970 to upconvert everything to 1080i component, including the OSD, I'd be in perfect shape.

Isn't the 970 supposed to have this capability? I don't use HDMI or DVI. Did I read something into the 970's capabilities that aren't there?

Thanks!

If I'm correct your 970 behaves the same as my 1070 and it does upconvert video signal to component(480i) but doesn't do any downconversion.
DVI is totally independant and offers only switching capabilities.
I think your lines of jibberish or garbled video signal might be a scalling issue (or over scalling I'm really not sure)
I think if you want to retain your 1080i resolution from your dvd player and still feed your other video sources by component you might have to simply feed your dvd player's video signal directly into your 1080i input on your tv display
and feed the other sources through the 970 and into your 480i tv input
a simple solution ...maybe not the best...

Laventura,

Your solution is exactly the one I implemented. Not ideal, but it does work.

Thanks!

Your TV doesn't have a single input that supports both 480i and HD (480p, 720p, and 1080i) inputs, but the 970 passes any and all of these resolutions through the single component output. Like nearly all processors, the 970's component switching does not include deinterlacing and scaling capabilities (I'd say "all" but you can find onboard scaling and de-interlacing if you spend enough, such as the Anthem AVM-50 and Statement D2 for $5,700 or $6,700). This means that any 480i source (which covers composite, s-video, and some component) remains 480i even when transcoded to component. The 970 also overlays the OSD menu onto composite and s-video sources only (it doesn't overlay them onto component inputs to avoid degrading the more complex video signal); since the overlay takes place prior to transcoding to component, you can still see the menus at the component output when one of those sources is active. Unfortunately, the output is still 480i just like the input.

What we've got here is a quirk of some displays that I always thought was a bit restrictive (component inputs that only work with certain input resolutions). Without a single component input that will handle the full range of possible component resolutions, we're going to have to get a bit creative. Probably the best solution is the one that Laventura proposed - since you only have one source capable of a resolution higher than 480i, you should probably connect that one source straight to the TV. If in the future you replace the Tivo with an HD unit, you'd probably want to flip-flop things and just connect the PS2 directly to the TV and switch all your other sources (both the upscaling DVD player and the HD Tivo) through the 970.

Should I see the OSD in 1080i if I'm watching a 1080i source?

Right now, if I connect the 1080i DVD player through the 970 into the 1080i TV input, I do not see any of the OSD.

If I got a scaler to upconvert everything to 1080i, I may still have the problem with the OSD at 1080i. Correct?

Hi again mt,
the OSD on the 970 and 1070 will pass through component but only at 480i.
so no a scaler would not solve that issue.. wink
