Two questions:

1) I am using my prev AVR as an amplifier for the 970. The AVR has an AVR Trigger input, and the 970 has a trigger output, so I am contemplating using the triggers to turn on the AVR, but I have zero experience with this. Has anyone done this before? It is recommended? If so, what type of cable do I need?

2) I have a Niles Audio IR repeater, and have the flashers glued to the front of the various components. Both the 970 and my AVR have IR Inputs and Outputs. Can I use a use the IR Input instead of the flashers from the Niles Audio (I don't have any doc on the Niles unit). It would be a much cleaner look using the IR Inputs behind.

Thanks, your input is greatly appreciated.

What receiver do you have? A trigger input in a receiver is unusual, but if there is actually one available you should be able to turn the receiver on with the 970 on and the trigger connected - when the 970 turns off, the trigger cable would shut down the receiver.

I suspect that the Niles IR repeater will work with the 970 by connecting an IR output of the Niles to the IR input of the 970. My Xantech IR repeater worked fine this way with the 950, but it did not work with the IR input of my 990 or my cable box (both of which require a special module to interface with the Xantech gear I have) so I'm using emitters for them. With the 970 and 1070 coming from the same place as the 950 (I believe they are manufactured for Outlaw by Eastech just as the 950 was), I suspect their IR input is similar to the 950's. You can either give it a try or ask Outlaw .

I have an NAD T762. The following is from the NAD manual:

TRIGGER IN connects to the 12-volt trigger outputs of compatible components such as power controllers and home automation devices. The
TRIGGER AUTO/OFF switch selects the 12V Trigger Input and disables the remote and front panel ON function.

I am just curius how universal these things are.

The trigger should be completely universal - it's a matter of the input receiving a 12V signal or not receiving one.

Hi,
I happen to have some experience in this matter. Here is how I made it work:
1. Determine the connectors needed. For the 970 the 12V trigger output uses a 3.5mm mono plug.
2. Figure out the type of connector that is required by your AVR. There are several kinds. This is the hard part. Keep in mind, that some connectors are color coded. So if you are fortunate then the color at the back of the AVR will tell you the connector type.
3. Now, walk over to the nearest radioshack and buy:
a. Adaptaplug wire.
b. A 3.5mm mono connector for the 970. This is also made by Adaptaplug
c. Appropriate connector for the AVR. Made by Adaptaplug. You just want the connector, no wire.
d. A multi-meter, if you don't have one.

Now you have a cable when you connect (a), (b) & (c) together. They plug in quite easily. This will be the cable. But we still don't know the polarities.

Now, comes the interesting part. The multi-meter. This can be used to determine the polarities. The tip will give you +12V from the 970. You will have to determine what the AVR needs. My manual told me that the tip of the AMP had to be +12V. So I verified that with the multimeter. Then I plugged it in.
Now, whenever you turn-on the 970, everything should wake up.

Long story short, both the IR and 12 Volt triggers are working very well, and I am very pleased not to have the flashers glued to the front of the 970 and the AVR. For less than $9 spent, I have made significant improvements to the aesthics and functionality of my system. I am grateful for the various audio forums that provide such excellent advice.
