I guess that maybe I can ask another question that is sort of along these lines...

Does anyone else experience a much quieter volume level when decoding a digital signal, say from a movie or digital cable box, compared to the same volume setting when listening to a source across an analog connection? Is it the amp, the source, cabling?

There may be a couple things happening there. First, Dolby Digital and DTS tracks included on DVD's are intentionally mixed much lower than other sources to preserve headroom and avoid clipping during sudden loud passages. As a result, DVD's will typically be as much as 10dB quieter than other sources.

If you switch between digital and analog output from a given source and experience noticeably different volume levels, I'd suspect the source primarily - especially for multichannel digital sources that must be decoded and downmixed before being output as analog stereo. I haven't noticed it myself, but I have very rarely switched between digital and analog output in this manner.

It could very well be the source. It's an older Onkyo S-555... nothing fancy at all. I will try switching between digital and analog just to see what happens. I think I will also test whether or not decoding the Dolby Digital signal at the source helps.

The 10db's less in volume is about right from my experience so maybe I'm seeing "normal" results.
