I had trouble with my HM-31 a few weeks ago specifically because I did use a stereo cable first: it wouldn't work until I changed to a mono cable. Also, be aware that the Motorola box may be similar to the Pace Micro and Scientific Atlanta boxes (it may require a special interface module).
