I am beginning to build a new HT sytem. I have started with the centerpiece, a new 50" Samsung plasma. I am in the market to replace my old Onkyo which will find a new home in my home office. I have read practically every post on the 1070 and most of the 970. I am impressed with the high marks it receives from customers and professional reviewers alike. However, the no audio issues scare me. I am very impatient, and don't know if I can put up with the bugs. My question is, if I were to pass on the 1070 now and wait for the bugs to be worked out or simply wait for a new model in 2008, what would you suggest?

I have looked at the Denon 2807 quite a bit, and it appears to be a reliable piece of equipment, though it may not match the sound quality of the 1070 At a retail of around $1,100, I don't really want to exceed that in my budget. I know that's not a lot to work with, but give me your thoughts.

My listening will be roughly 50/50 music and movies, and I like my sound kind of neutral not too harsh on the ears for extended listening.

I'll let the experts respond, but I will say this - the no audio bug in the 1070 would never sway me to a competing Denon model. I've listened to both, and in my highly complex and audiophile-ish vocabulary, my belief is the Outlaw 1070 owns the competition in this price range. laugh

If HDMI switching is really important to you, you may want to wait for the new model, but I think it will be 2008 like you suggested before that becomes a reality. You and I have about the same ratio of music/HT and I really do love how this receiver excels at both.

my two cents...good luck w/ your decision.

Thanks, that's one for the 1070. The HDMI switching is not super important to me. I have always taken my video outputs (cable box, dvd, etc.) directly to tv and audio outputs to receiver. In my new setup, I planned to take HDMI from cable box and dvd to tv, digital audio cables from cable box and dvd to receiver -- and then turn off internal speakers on tv. Does this sound ok, or would I receive benefit from video switching at the receiver (assuming I had a reciever capable of HDMI swithching)? Keep your replies coming on the 1070, 2807, or other!!

The 2807 is probably the obvious parallel to the 1070 as far as budget goes. Denon traditionally gets the latest features into their product lines (particularly the big-buck models) ahead of almost anybody else. As RedSIinPA points out, though, Outlaw can probably claim an upper hand in sound quality. In addition to the sound quality differences (which 1070 owners' feedback tends to indicate favors the 1070), there's also the support side of the equation. I couldn't find the warranty on the Denon, but the 1070 has a two-year warranty that is transferrable - and you don't have to worry whether or not you are buying from an authorized dealer (which will determine whether or not Denon honors their warranty). There's also Outlaw's customer service team (a phone call or e-mail away) and of course the crowd around here.

The DVI/HDMI video switching in Outlaw's products is transparent, so there's no downside to routing the cable and DVD signals through the 1070. The video switching won't offer any performance benefit, but the bright side is ease of use: leave the plasma on that one HDMI input all the time and the 1070's input controls will take care of the video switching without any thought or effort from you.

From all we've seen so far, the current beta firmware for the 1070 and 970 (which you'd need to install yourself, since they're not going to ship new product with a beta installed) seems to have done a whole lot to improve matters with the "no audio" bug - no official declaration of "success!" yet, but indications are positive.

Thanks gonk. Your comments are always honest and straightforward. I'm in no hurry, so I'll keep reading posts, and doing my research. I guess I'll make a decision sooner or later. Anyone else have comments?

Thanks SP72, any no audio issues, have you installed the beta?

Note: I've got that same same Velodyne sub. It's a good little sub huh.

I have not installed the beta yet because my laptop does not have a serial port.

the "no audio" issues is still there and happens more often when I am listening to the music CD because the input setting is default to analog when no audio signal is detected in the optial input. And the processor is too low to detect/process the audio signal when it is present in the optical input(the issue is always happen bettween 2 track).

I have to set 1 input (DVD)to analog only for music, the other one (VIDEO1) with optical to watch movie and mo more audio issues since then.

I will try to install the beta this week and hopefully it will fix the problems. If not, I will keep the same above setting until Outlaw come up with the new fix ( hopefully before the 1070 will be discontinued cool )

Otherwise, I am really happy with the sound quality.

I've said this on a few different threads before, but the best argument that I can give for the sound quality of the 1070 is to say that I still love it, even with the annoyances. If it wasn't for its amazing quality for the price range, I'd have gotten rid of it a long time ago.
