In your space, Videodrome, I'd probably stick with 5.1.

I'm also going to experiment with just one speaker aiming upward. A little 6.1 action, since few standard DVD's are truly encoded 7.1 to my knowledge.

That's probably a good test for your space.

No DVD's are encoded in discrete 7.1 - no such format exists outside of HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Dolby EX, DTS ES, and even DTS's NEO:6 matrix decoder are technically 6.1 formats. Pro Logic IIx can produce discrete left and right surround back channels from 5.1 sources (the 1070 can do it with Dolby or DTS, although not all receivers can with DTS) as well as Dolby EX tracks, assuming the EX flag doesn't force it to use EX decoding.

I setup the 6th channel this past weekend. Right now it's bumped up close to the couch which is definiteily inferior to backing the speaker away from my listening position a few feet. The flexibility to do so while I'm movie watching is there just because I left plenty of slack in the speaker wire and the stand and speaker are attached to each other. I put the stand back next to the couch when I'm done, which is more wife friendly than leaving it standing in the middle of the floor wink

I'm now using Dolby PLIIx-C for my movies and I really like using this new mode on the Outlaw. I tried Dolby PLIIx-M while watching the Gorillaz live concert on the new HD MTV channel. That sounded AMAZING. Lovin' it.
