Twice in the past couple of weeks my 1070 has turned on making strange noises. The first time it was loud and like I had a loose connection in my aux input (no I don't). Last night I turned it on and put needle to record and got a very peculiar buzzing noise along with some weak music. Very strange. In both cases simply turning the Outlaw off and on corrected the problem. I'm coming to the conclusion that the 1070 must be like having a spouse who is a porn star. Great performance but lots of quirks. I'm beginning to think a simple Asian built tube preamp with no 'brains' will be my final choice for making music. So far the 1070 is more enjoyable than annoying but I'm really starting to wonder if software based systems are the way to go. And this is from a guy who built his own computer in 1976...

I know what you mean a bit. I still have to update my No Volume behaving 1070 right now. My problem evolved a bit last night where the sound just stopped in the middle of watching the superbowl. I wasn't changing sources or channels. It just stopped. Swapping sources fixed it, as usual. Unfortunately, updating the 1070 requires me to unhook it completely and bring it downstairs to where my PC w/ a serial port lives.

What version of the firmware are you running? If it's the latest beta, I'd recommend e-mailing details of any quirks to swtest@outlawaudio.com as requested here .

That must have been a pain - although my sound cut out briefly too - on my regular old TV running regular old basic cable... ;-)
My 1070 also fails to provide a colour picture from my DVD player all the time. Repeatedly changing the source was necessary last time. I should check my firmware version but you'd figure it was the latest since I received the unit in December...
The serial port update is a bit of a pain since fewer and fewer computers are coming with RS232 ports now. Hopefully all audio manufacturers will move to USB or something soon. USB can'be be very expensive to implement if you can find it in a $10 memory stick! For now I have to borrow a laptop from work if I want to do an update... sniff.

Thanks Gonk. Yeah, I have to get off my butt and check my version. Didn't know there was a beta of a new one out. I AM Joe Beta when it comes to computers so it probably won't be any different here.... ;-)

agreed. RS232 is a dying interface. I wish they'd troubleshoot why USB/Serial isn't working. Then I'd be able to leave my 1070 in place and use my laptop.
anyways, I'm using whatever firmware Outlaw shipped them with back in July 06.

The beta firmware is still brand new (posted in the last week or so), and is specifically intended to address "no sound" issues - it doesn't sound exactly like what you're seeing, Cybermynd, but it might be a good place to start. I thought I'd seen a post or two from folks who had successfully used USB/serial adapters for the firmware update? This post by ragnar suggests that it can be done, while this post suggests certain adapters that may be most reliable.

gonk - as usual, you rock. if I can avoid pulling my 1070 out of the entertainment center, that would be a huge break. I'll take a look. given where I work, I should be able to obtain onse of these USB/Serials w/o issue. I know the converters I see here are used to connect to Cisco routers/switches for critical data, so my guess is they're pretty reliable.

I'm using a USB-Serial adapter with great success, but the first one I used sucked ass. The first one I had the IS dept at work provided with the computer... don't know how it happened, but I seem to have ... lost it. I bought an IOGear one at Wal-Mart for $25 and that one works great. There is also a post around here someplace (or it was lost when the upgrade thread got cleaned out) that talked about a more expensive $50 one that is supposed to be more reliable. I just take my laptop, crawl behind the entertainment center, zap it and I'm done... If I had to pull it out I would still be dealing with the issues, because I must have about 50 cables hooked up to the thing by now!
Edit: I forgot to say that the first one that sucked was "Tripplite" brand.
