Hello all fellow Outlaws!!!!
I am hoping soon to be buying a 1070 for my listening pleasure. I am thinking of using Ascend 340 Mains or the Alon II Mk2 speakers at first, maybe the HSU stf-2 or Outlaw lfm-2 sub soon after.
Does anyone know which speakers sound best with this 1070? Can this receiver sound good enough to not use an amp with preamp?
Looking forward to your answers.

I'm in the camp that doesn't believe in matching speakers to electronics. The sonic differences between speakers is much, much greater than that between electronics, so choose the speakers that sound best to you and don't worry how they'll sound with the 1070 or any other receiver, preamp, or amp. Speakers and room acoustics, that's the key. But that's just my opinion (and it applies to electronics that are comparable in price).

I agree with cvinfig that the most important step is to find speakers that you like. The most important interaction between speaker and electronics is making the receiver's amps can drive those speakers. The Ascend 340's are reasonably efficient 8-ohm speakers, so the 1070 should handle them fine. Specs on the Alon are a bit harder to come by - the Acarian site is currently under construction, but I did find some specs here . Again, it's an 8-ohm speaker, although it's slightly less efficient than the Ascend 340.

Gonk and Cvinfig,
Thanks so much for replying to my request. Gonk, you always write back and I love that. The link you sent is for a small pair of Book shelf speakers I think. My buddy has a pair of the Alon II Mk2 and with his Audio Research SP6 preamp and the VTL compact 100 mono block Tube amps, the sound is AWESOME.
Is the sound of the 1070 good enough for me not to think about using an amp and preamp in your opionon?

I have several questions. Is the only difference between the 7700 and the 7500 two channels of power? Also, comparing the 1070 to the 990/7700 combination, is the sound and performance so much superior as to warrant the expense from $1000 to $3000? Lastly, are any new models coming down the pipeline shortly and should I wait or grab the 990/7700 now? Thank you in advance.

Yes, the only difference between the 7700 and 7500 is the 7700's two extra amp channels.
You will certainly here a difference between the 1070 and the 990/7700. How much will depend in part on your speakers (more efficient speakers will have less need for the extra power, which will determine just how much difference the separate amp makes). Whether that difference is worth $2000 is a matter of some debate, with no right answer. I really love the sound of my 990/7500 setup (with Model 200's driving side surrounds) and would probably have a hard time accepting the change stepping down to a 1070 would represent, but I still remember how nice my old 1050 sounded - once you reach the level of a 990/7700 you are well into the realm where each upgrade is a matter of diminishing returns.
We have no word on upcoming products, but I'd expect the next generation to include HDMI v1.3, which will take some time for Outlaw to include - late summer would seem to be the absolute earliest, and even that is probably a stretch. Granted, that's just me guessing, but it's the best guess I can make...
