Just finished hooking up the 1070 to replace my Yamaha RX-V630. I'm running Rocket speakers (750 front/200 center/300 surrounds) at 88dB/6ohm, 91dB/4ohm and 89dB/6ohm respectively. I'm about 10 feet from the mains & center and 4 feet from the surrounds. I've set the impedence selector on 1070 to 4ohms as instructed. I ran the volume on the 1070 all the way to +10dB and ran the test tones. I get mid to upper 70s of SPL using a Radio Shack digital meter. Is this what I should expect for SPL levels on the test tones at full volume?

The goal for test tones is around 75dB with the volume at 0dB. With somewhat less efficient speakers, I would not be surprised if you needed a few extra dB of trim, so upper 70's at +10dB volume is about right.

Thanks for the info. Would it be adviseable to reset the volume to 0dB and trim the speakers up a little to get close to 75dB? I think I was seeing about 66-68dB at 0dB during the first pass.

To some degree, it is a matter of personal preference. The central goal of calibration is to have the same level from all channels. How much trim do you have on individual channels right now?

During the initial run (mid 70's at +10 volume) I only had the center trimmed by 1dB. Ran another check tonight... and with +10dB trim on the center, +7 on the L/R and +8 on the surrounds I can maintain 73dB with the test tones at my listening position with the receiver's volume at 0.

I do not own the 1070. If you want to calibrate to a known level (e.g. 75 dB with dial at 0), you have to know the dB level of the test tone.

Without knowing the test tone dB level, you can only use the test tones to set the SPL of each speaker relative to each other.

I looked at the manual, and could not find the dB level for the test tone generator.

Use the Avia disk or something similar. Best $13 you'll ever spend.

I know this is a very old post but do we know for sure the dB level of the test tones when set to 0dB volume yet? The reason that I ask is that I recently moved, and can't find my Avia disc to use to calibrate so I'm stuck with those.
