I was looking through some posts on the 990 about bypass, and from what I understand, when in bypass mode the signal is sent to the fronts/mains unaltered and Bass Management is applied to get a signal to the sub. Is that correct and is that the way it works in the 1070?

Does it matter if the fronts are set to small or large?

The 990 and 1070 are very different architectures, so the way the 990 works may not apply to the 1070. Either way, it is an excellent question.

Just to update, I received a reply from Steve (thanks Steve) with the following info:

The 1070's "BYPASS" mode is a pure analog bypass available with any analog source. The front main speakers are driven full range and no low pass content is delivered to the sub regardless of speaker size in the menu.

So there's the answer in case anyone was wondering.

Unfortunately, that is not how it works in all cases. It only works that way if you have the bass management toggle set to digital. On my 1070 when using the analog CD inputs and using bypass mode, I still get subwoofer activity because my bass management toggle is set to the fixed 80 Hz setting. The only way I don't get a sub signal when listening to 2 channel music is to set the front speakers to large and select no subwoofer in the config - or set the toggle to digital.

Does that apply to the all inputs, or just the DVD input? Obviously, I could be mistaken, but I would have expected the bypass mode to operate independently of the bass management toggle (which is there for the 7.1 direct input only, although it would probably also come into play for the stereo analog DVD input since the 7.1 direct input is an extension of the DVD).

Bypass only is available for analog sources. It doesn't apply to the DVD inputs.

Sorry - let me clarify. The DVD input does have analog stereo inputs, as do all other inputs on the 1070, even though most of us rarely if ever use them. In the case of the 1070, the left and right analog inputs of the 7.1 direct input group are shared with the DVD input (so the DVD's stereo analog inputs are also the two of the eight analog channels of the 7.1 direct input). I'm curious to know if this bass management behavior that you're seeing (namely that the bass management toggle affects stereo analog inputs) is true for all stereo analog inputs or if it is just the stereo analog input that is shared with the 7.1 input. I ask because I would expect the switch to affect the stereo analog input assigned to the DVD input, but I would not expect it to affect all other stereo inputs (based on the way I would expect the bass management switch to work and the way it worked on the Model 950).

If you select the DVD input, and select optical inputs opposed to the 7.1 inputs you can select stereo as a surround mode. This mode appears to put a very weak base signal to the sub. If you press the bypass button it has no effect. If you select the 7.1 DVD input mode and your bass management is set "bypass" then your surround setting simply says "bypass" and you can't change it to anything else. If you select the 7.1 DVD input mode and base managment is set to digital, your surround options are limited to digital, dolby +PCM PL11x-C and M.
