I got as far as Installation Instructions about half way down page 2. After opening the folder and hitting "RUN", I come to a Winzip window and hit "UNZIP".
I then get an error message that says:
CAN'T CREATE OUTPUTFILE:C: PROGRAMFILES\OUTLAWAUDIO990\SETUP.EXE
Any advice would be appreciated.
Keep in mind, I'm about a 5 out of 10 when it comes to computer stuff.
I did install the Winzip program.

It's installed on computer. When I go to unzip is when I get the error message.
Are you only able to save it as a zipped file?

It's installed on computer. When I go to unzip is when I get the error message. It sounds like you have saved the original file to the computer, but not yet extracted the files in the original download or installed the software. Are you only able to save it as a zipped file? I haven't downloaded firmware for the 990 in over a year and I haven't installed the loader software in several years, so I'm working solely from the instructions. It appears that the original download should be a .exe file (a self-extracting zip file), not a .zip file. When you run that .exe file, it should open a WinZip dialog and use a default path for extracting the contents. The path you show in your original post is not likely to work. It should start with "C:\Program Files" - I don't know if the lack of the backslash after C: and the lack of a space in Program Files is an artifact of copying the error message or an actual omission in the WinZip extractor.

OK I got to No. 14 on page 3. It is copied below:
The upgrade process will take about five minutes or so, depending on whether you are using a serial or RS-232 connection. As it proceeds you will see messages and the progress bar in the middle of the loader window move through various separate steps such as establishing data communications, erasing the current firmware, and doing the actual data transfer. No action is required during the upgrade.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In the event that an error occurs during the upgrade, the process will stop and a pop-up box will appear with a “Device (Outlaw) Restart!” message. If this happens check the data connection cable, click on the “OK” button within the pop-up and then turn the Model 990 Off and then On again within one second. Click on the Upgrade button in the software loader and restart the process from Step 7.
I keep getting the “Device (Outlaw) Restart!” message.
It says to turn off and then turn on the 990.
I can't find wher the 990 was turned on prior to this...meaning it's already off.

Hello Spanky, how did the upgrade go? I had some of the problems you note, and here's what I did. All of the upgrade files should unzip to a folder in C:\program files\ . I created a folder before unzipping labeled "Outlaw Audio Model 990" for the approximately 20 files. Once unzipped, click on the "setup" file to create the desktop icon/application.
During the actual 990 update, I also got the "Device (Outlaw) Restart" message. Just cycle the Master power button on the back panel quickly. This will force a USB reconnect with the computer, and for me the upgrade then progressed smoothly per instructions. I hope you have been able to resolve your problems by now.

Not resolved yet...I was using my sons lap top to try and do the upgrade and he needed it back.
I will probably have to disconnect the 990 from the 4,697 wires going to it and try the upgrade on the desk top upstairs.
I could use the exercise!
Thanks for the advice.

The lap top I had was using the Vista operating system...I talked to Scott today and he said it's a pain to upgrade using Vista.
Hauled the 9090 upstairs...the upgrade loader icon is on my desktop...but now I can't get the computer to recognize the 9090 is connected via the USB cable...
The noise that is normally made when you connect something new via USB is being made only doubled.
So it's like it connects and then disconnects immediately.
The desktop I'm using uses XP.
I hate to go buy an RS-232 cable if it's not going to work either.
Any thoughts.

Spankydog, did you set the USB OPR/SVC switch to SVC? This switch is to the right of the USB port looking at the back (to the left if looking from the front). It's a tiny slide switch and needs to be in the down (SVC) position to upgrade the firmware. In the normal OPR position, the 990 thinks the USB is a signal input, but in the SVC position it makes the USB act like a typical computer USB port. You didn't mention this switch, so my guess is this is the issue.
I have only upgraded my 990 once when I first received it almost a year ago, and it was a flawless operation. I really don't remember much about the experience apart from not having any problems. I don't recall what computer I used, but I think I did use Windows rather than trying to execute the upgrade from Linux with WINE. My only Windows computer has 98SE on it, so my experience was not with a current Windows OS.

I moved the switch so that's not the issue.
My computer makes the noise that it recognizes it and then immediately makes the noise that it's been disconnected.
I'm going to call Outlaw Monday morning and see what they have to say.
According to the instructions you can also do the update with an RS-232 cable. I picked one up at Best Buy but don't want to use it if I don't have to.
Been out of work for awhile and every dollar counts.
