Believe it or not, I do not have a BlueRay player but have been thinking of it since the Oppo BDP-83 universal player has met with such a great response. (my cuurent DVD player is the Integra DPC-8.5). 

The question:  I have an Outlaw audio 990 preamplifier with the 7700 7x200 amp. My tv is an older 50 inch pioneer elite (PRO-1130HD). It's limit is 1080i. Viewing distance 8-10 feet). 

Is the plunge (buying the oppo) worth it with this set up. (Outlaw is coming out with the 997 which is more blueray friendly and of course there is the 1080p Kuro- neither of which do I have plans to purchase anytime soon. )

The BDP-83 is my recommendation for a Blu-ray player to pair with the Model 990. I've even put together a set of setup guides for the BDP-83 with various Outlaw processors (incuding one for the 990 ).

Certainly. 1080i from 8' to 10' is a very good HD viewing environment.
