I tried to watch a disc using my Philips Blu-Ray player for the first time with my new 990 last night, but it didn't work right. I was using the player's HDMI output with an HDMI-DVI cable into the 990's DVI 1 input, and then a DVI-HDMI cable from the DVI monitor out to my Panasonic AE900U front projector. The screen image looked like I was getting only the top part of the intended image, stretched vertically to fit the screen height. This was true not only for content from the disc, but also for setup menus from the player itself. I couldn't really tell how much of the image was missing off the bottom, but if someone were to tell me that I was seeing the top 720 lines of a 1080 line image, I'd believe it. I did check the BR disc player's setting to be sure it was using 720p output, though.

When I switched to the component video I/O, everything looked fine. Also, I've previously used this player with a 970 pre/pro and never saw this problem, although I can't swear for sure that I was using the HDMI/DVI I/O at the time.

Oh - one additional note: I use the HDMI output of my cable box to go to DVI2, and that works just fine, so from the 990 to the projector, the settings seem to be correct.

Any ideas?

I wish I had the answer, but unfortunately all I can do is affirm that yes, this happens because HDMI is a poorly implemented "committee standard" that unfortunately introduces problems while solving for others.

To give you an example, if I run my Mac Mini DVI>HDMI direct to my TV's HDMI in, the picture is a perfectly clean 1280x720. If I run it through my pre/pro's HDMI switching, the mac and TV both say it's 1280x720, but it has a black bar around the edge of the screen and the sync is off, making it look soft.

Try running your HDMI cable direct from your blu-ray to your projector; whether it works or not will tell you if the 990 is introducing the problem.

Thanks, Greg - that's more or less what I expected.

It won't be easy to run directly from the BD player to the projector since I don't have an HDMI cable that long (and don't really want to move either component). I'll probably just get by with component video connections until I upgrade to a 1080p projector, which hopefully will present the digital input correctly.

There are lots of us passing 1080p (and all resolutions below) thru our 990's. I have my Directv box to one DVI input and my PS3 to the other. I'd bet you have a cable issue. There are multiple variations of the HDMI to DVI adapters and cables. I'd bet one of these is the culprit.

I tried to connect Sony Blue Ray player s550 through 990 using the HDMI
Is this problem specific to my setup or does somebody else have the same issue like mine?

I know several of you able to pass thru 1080P resolution from 990's DVI hook up. So I am not sure what is the problem here other than quirky HDMI/DVI issues among equipments.

Check out my setup guide for some notes on setting up the 990 with a Blu-ray player. The BDP-83 part will be only loosely relevant, but the 990 section may help you. My main thought is that you need to make sure the 990's input is set up correctly to switch to the right DVI input. You might also experiment with different resolutions just to see if it is a bandwidth issue.

When I first got my 990 I ordered a BJC DVI to HDMI cable which was faulty. Have you tried to swap cables? BJC took care of it immediately to my complete satisfaction. They even overnighted the new cable before I sent the old on back.

I ordered three HDMI-DVI adapters and all three of them acted same way. In any case, the setup menu of Sony S550's HDMI option section is greyed out thus unable to select this hookup option whenever I am trying to connect through 990's DVI.

Everything else works as it should except DVI option. Whenever I tried to direct connect from S550 to front projector, it allows me to select HDMI option in my BDP. My front projector is Panasonic PT-AE4000U.

one thing I've noticed since HDMI's birth...
not all disc transports are equal when it comes to HDCP...
some handle it rather well...while others just plain suck...
if you have the luxury of trying a different HDMI source you might have a better idea of who or what is causing your issues

Yeah, not all HDMI connections are created equal. My previous RPTV worked fine through my 990. I have another BDP (Samsung) in my bedroom and I am going to try to hook that up through 990 over this weekend to find out where is the culprit. If this hook up option is not compatible through 990, I might have to look hard for upgrade when 997 arrives even though I am very satisfied with 990's performance (other than this hiccup).
