I was a little disappointed in the difference between the new DTS HD and the performance of the standard 990 DTS. Sure it was better but not to the extent I was expecting. I’m using 5.1 not 7.1. I read Secrets Review and the reviewer had similar results. Never caught on with SACD but read it was a much larger difference. I tried GONK'S minus 3 plus 6 on the sub. I found the outputs almost the same only needed 1.5 boosts in base. I would give it about a 25% improvement factor.

What DTS-HD Master Audio tracks did you try? Lossless audio can be good, but it also depends on the quality of the original mix. Also, have you tried any TrueHD or multichannel PCM tracks?

I tryed the following movies.Spiderman 3, The Dark Knight,Gran Torino, Seabiscuit and Kill Bill. I have not tried any multichannel PCM tracks. Any suggestions on some. By the way The Dark Knight was the best of them all. I believe it has the best picture of all the movies as well. I first saw the movie at IMAX in Dallas and this movie really looked good. When I get some time I thought about running the OPPO directly into the amps to see what removing 6 audio cables does for improving the sound.

It has a English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 soundtrack. I have the Model 990 and the Oppo BDP-83. I connected the Oppo to the Model 990 via the analog inputs and followed Gonk's Oppo BDP-83 set-up tips. Everything sounded great.

You might also try some music. I was listening to Date Matthews and Tim Reynolds last night after I finished some work, and the 5.1 TrueHD track is quite good.

I've seen differing opinions on this approach. OPPO doesn't recommend it for folks wanting best sound quality because of the way the volume control works inside the player. On the other hand, I've seen folks do it with high end gear (there was even a very pricey speaker manufacturer at a trade show last year using a 983H directly into amps and to speakers).

JayDee I will try Hellboy II later this week and and some other recommendations GONK gave. GONK I have run my previous OPPO 970HD directly to my amps in the past and it sounded good but as you know you throw all the flexibility away. I really enjoy the flexibility.
