My remote control for the 990 won't power the system on. It will turn it off though. I tried re- programming it with no luck. What am I doing wrong?

The power button on the remote is a discrete power off. The input buttons are all discrete power on commands (good for programming macros on universal remotes). Try pressing one of the input commands and it will turn on.

If it makes you feel any better, this is a commonly asked question. I think I'm going to suggest Outlaw include a slip of paper with the 997's remote covering that feature if they retain this feature, as it's probably the most common question for the 950, 970/1070, and 990. (Although I think the 990's DVI switching might give it a run for its money in that regard...)

The 990 owner's manual does describe the remote power on and power off function on page 34, although the brief description is easy to read over and not get a clear understanding of the function. I was also baffled by the power button when first using the 990. It took my wife reading the manual to instruct me on how to use the remote to turn the 990 on and off.

I had the same question on my 970, and yes I read the manual. My interpretation was to press the device selection button and then the power button, which of course didn't work.

Just to be clear, press the source buttons at the bottom of the remote to power on. These are the buttons to switch input from one source to another, not the device buttons at the top that change what device the remote is controlling. (i.e., press the DVD button at the bottom to turn on the system with DVD input selected)
