I've been a religious 2-channel music listener but have recently been playing around with Dolby Prologic IIx Music instead. I have to admit, I think I prefer it now that I've dialed in the front soundstage.

However, I've noticed that the bass signal sent to my subwoofer in DPIIx Music is at least 6-10 dB stronger than the signal sent to my sub when playing 2-channel stereo (either Bypass, Upsample of Stereo). I need to trim my subwoofer settings when I switch to DBIIx Music by a fair bit to reduce the signal by 6-10 dB.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? Do others experience this? Is it a quirk with DBIIx Music?

I'm surprised by this experience, especially considering that DBIIx Movie doesn't seem to "pump" the subwoofer signal.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Bryan

I'm surprised you are having that problem. I also enjoy my music through a tweeked to taste PLII music decoder. I use it on two different systems...each with a powered sub but each set up differently.

With my living room system, I use the LF out channels on my Outlaw 990 and let the 990 handle the bass management by setting the levels in there. I have not noticed the bass levels being bumped up using PLII- music.

In my main system with an Integra dhc 9.9, Thiel 3.6 mains and a pair of Velodyne subs, I don't use the LF out on the preamp. I run the mains as full frequency into both the thiels and the velodyne subs and use the crossovers and volume settings on the velodynes to set the balance between subs and mains.

Again, once I have that balance set, I notice no big swings when I switch to PLII music

I am, as well, surprised I'm having this problem. It could also be that DPIIx Music is properly playing the bass through the sub and it's my 2-channel stereo/bypass/upsample modes that are improperly playing it.

Any other thoughts out there?

are you using an Outlaw 990? That upsample comment seems to indicate that.

Yes, I'm using a 990.
